Question about coilovers
Question about coilovers
I have a set of adjustable coilovers and they can lower the ride from 0 - 4 inches. The question I had was does putting these on with my factory struts cause the struts to get damaged any quicker, and if so, how much faster do they ruin the struts?

i think it all depends on the spring that is on thier. what type of coil overs did u get?
the brand is matrix, I bought them off a friend and I seen them on ebay going for 170 a set. I also seen them going for around 300 on the net, but price does not mean anything. Here is the web site for the manufacturer

i couldn't find anything on that site about your coilovers but o well. i bought some coilovers to and to this day i regret spending 200 bucks on something that just lowers my car and not knowing what the spring rate was and from what im experincing from mine i'd be lucky if my struts would last me atleast a year or 2. but for 200 buck what do you expect. But to ansewer your Q i couldn't say maybe till you put them on if they are stiff as hell your factory struts weren't made for that and they'll definately shorten the life of them pretty quickly. So good luck w/ your application and if you ever look into a real application for your suspension i would definately recommend Tien or Cusco just ask any one here and they'll tell you the same.
Maybe cya and good luck

if you put higher rate springs on stock struts you are making the strut react a lot faster than the damping inside allows them to move, eventually wearing them out, it also makes the strut work lower than it is designed to, you make it work in a range of 0-3" from the bottom, when it is designed to work 1-8" from the bottom(these are make estimate #s) it works too hard for what it is designed to do, and doesnt provide the response you need, you can use them still, but in a month or a year, whenever, it will eventually fail, and you will just bounce down the road

If you know how much you want to lower the car and real coilovers are out of the question then you might just want to look at getting replacement springs alone and a set of camber bolts or plates. Of course it all depends on how low you intend to make it. The generic conversion things are not worth the time and effort. If its worth doing then do it correctly the first time.
In short, those springs will reduce the life of your factory struts. You'd probably be lucky if your factory struts lasted for more than 6 months from the time you install the springs.
