Lift Kit
Just wondering if anyone out there has lifted your wrxs? I am in Iraq right now and when I get back, i wanted to put around a 12 inch lift on mine. My goal is to try and make it into a rock climmer, or close to it. Anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions?

I was in Turkey last year,
but I never got as bored as you are. You registered today and your first post is how to make a rockclimber out of a WRX? And I should give you a serious answer?

well just like the old i-club forum, no one gives me a answer. everyone just says thats dumb or i'm dumb. thats why i haven't been on since 2002. i will find a way to make it a rock climmer. low end rpms aren't a problem when your at 5500 rmp. oh ya about the Turkey thing, you could go off base at least and get a back rub by some big tukish guy, thats why you weren't bored.......

You must be a retard.
If everyone says that's dumb or you're dumb, doesn't that make you think? I'd suggest you take another year (at least) off. My handle is oldmansan for a reason. I have three kids and two grandchildren. I'll leave the big men rubbing something to you. I pray you're not military, we have enough problems. Your post was lame, your response was the same. I can't imagine why everyone isn't making the WRX into the perfect rockclimber!

Alwell, enough arguing. This "Retard" has a war to win. Everyone else, I'll post pics as I progress to make my WRX a rockclimmer, when I return to the States.

I think it's a cool idea.
Don't worry about what the board-urchins, old men, and street racer boys will tell you. Followers and puritans, they are. Do what you want, it's your car. Different is good.
They'll give me grief for this being my first post, too, not stopping to think even for second that maybe I too used to be on here often, but got sick of all the know-it-alls, so-called experts, naysayers, etc. So, I re-registered just to reply to this.
I was wondering about a WRX lift myself, too. Not exactly to make a full blown rock-crawler (I'd choose and older scoob hatch for that project), but to at least be able to drive most any wash I wish, and keep up with my truck buddies. I was out with them recently, and on any smooth-ish dirt/gravel/dry lake, they were amazed that I was WAY faster then they were, by like 30 mph. BUT, I just could not hang in some of the rougher sand washes with abrupt, steep water-crossings. So, I dont want to lift it as high as a crawler, or truck, but I'd love to try a 3" to 5" lift, to see what I could tackle. Hopefully it would not compromise the fun factor too much on the smooth stuff. It'd be worth the effort to try. Hell, a rally coilover setup would allow at least 2" more height and clearance, right?
There are many legacys and outback forresters with the big Aussie lift kits, (I bet one of them could be used on a WRX). They look great, and really are pretty capable in all but the roughest terrain. So, I'd love to see someone (you) do a big lift on a WRX, just to see what happens. Why not.
When you do it, email me pics and comments. Thanks.
Good luck in Iraq. Get it done and come home safe.

I will try to give u a straightforward answer. OK dude. I have spent some serious time around offroad vehicles. Most of them have solid front and rear axles with a coilover and 4 link suspension setup. The only probable way to do this is to transplant the wrx body onto either a custom made tube chassis or a lengthened jeep chassis. That way u could still use all of the engine and tranny. U will also need some sort of transfer case. Yes u could rev the engine up to 5k all the time but u will run the risk of clutch failure and low torque. the lower gears are just gonna take the strain off the running gear. Ok so that is what u will need for a real rockcrawler. But if u want a Subaru with an upgraded stace and some bigger tires. I am sure that DMS or Scorpian could do that for u. There ya go. I like your idea. Practical? maybe not... but a sweet idea nonetheless.

Oh yeah most of the rockcrawlers i have been around cost about 100 grand in chassis and suspension alone

It is fairly easy to lift a WRX a couple inches(Ground controls and AGX's would do it), but to make a 'rock-crawler' out of one you would have to follow legacyRuss's transplant idea. The Impreza body will be fine, but the chassis just 'aint gonna make it.
Better start sending one of those hummers home, one piece at a time....

there isn't a lift kit out for the wrx at all, scorpian makes one for the outback. but most you are going to get out of it is 2-3inches or so. lifting it 12" is pretty much impossible. but nothing is impossible with enough money. and the wrx wouldn't be the perfect rock climber. you would need to replace so many parts. the wrx parts aren't built to handle those kinds of stresses.

Don't you guys ever watch "Monster Garage"? The Corvette in the mud bog isn't something I would do but it was still cool. A rock climbing suby isn't my idea of fun either but hey, give the guy a break, if he does it and it works that's great, if it doesn't work then he tried. I'd rather try and fail than to not even try something and forever wish i had given it a try.

If you're looking for more low end you could drop a 2.5L in and mate it to a twinscroll. As for the suspention look for some daina(spelling?) 60 axels on ebay cuz they're like 5 or 6 grand new. They also come on F250s and F350s think junkyard. Learn to wield if you don't know how to already. This sound like a cool project my roomate is turning his jeep into a rockcrawler. He's gone for the weekend so i'll ask him about this on monday.
Also my sister's best friends's husband was a medic there (finished his time over there). I have so much respect for you guy and I don't care what some grouchy old man has to say. Stay safe out there and keep up the good work.

If you guys are interested in lifting your WRX you should check out www.easystreetmotorsports.com. I think they have a lifted Baja with about 500hp. It's not lifted 12in (thats crazy) but it does have a lift and a heck load of power....must be fun to drive. I personnally prefer a nice drop and a stiff suspension on my WRX.
