Changing front rotors
i have a '00 Sub Impreza RS- i am having trouble getting off the front rotors; are they machine pressed on? do i need to take my car somewhere to be done, or can i use a gear pull perhaps?? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

If the front rotors on your MY00 Impreza are like my WRX rotors, there are two holes tapped for 8mm (thread, not hex head size). Go to any hardware warehouse store and buy a package of 8mm cap screws. Spray some WD-40 or silicone lube into the threaded holes and cinch two 8mm screws into the holes, evenly. The screws will push against the hub and the rotor will pop right off.

/\ wut he said, however, when I did mine, I used a gear puller (screwed into the above mentioned holes.).....so yea, you could do that too. They just get tight like that after dirt, and grime get worked into the area around the studs, behind the rotor, and after lots of heat cycling. Your new rotors will do the same thing after awhile. Its not out of the ordinary.

Subaru wouldn't have bothered to drill and tap the two holes in the rotors, and then print the procedure in the shop manual if they wanted the factory technicians to use a hammer to pound on the edge of the rotor to remove it. Sure, a hammer works but you risk damaging a perfectly good rotor. Using two screws pops a stuck rotor loose from the hub in less than ten seconds with very little effort.
Get some PB blaster and smack the **** out of em with a rubber malet. I've been doing it for years and never had a problem. Works every time. When you do the rear don't forget to keep your e-brake off

the extractor bolts on hub I believe were M8x1.25. this is the best way to remove the rotor
If you do not have bolts laying around a rubber mallet will work since you're no longer going to use the rotor you're taking off and it sucks selling used rotors, you're taking them off for a reason

Yeah, they are regular 12mm bolts. Remember though. Use the ones you don't need and the ones that are not threaded all the way to the tip. Look for bolts with unthreaded foreskin on the tip, haha. Because after you jam them into the hum, a fully threaded bolt will get stuck in the rotor. My "tool" bolt that I use are the 12mm bolts that hold those weird vertical bars behind the rear seat. They have a nice huge washer to hold them by and have about 5mm of unthreaded tip.

To remove factory rotors if they are stuck on the hub flange, use 8mm capscrews from any Lowe's or Home Depot. It only takes about a 1/4 turn to pop the rotor off once the screws contact the hub flange. So quick and painless!
