calling suspension gurus on a clunk!

I have an '02 wrx sedan with sti spec c takeoffs installed and a cusco rear sway bar (as well as rota subzero 17s with 225/45/17 sumitomos).

When I take a right turn into a driveway, as well as other similar situations, I get a clunk from the right rear suspension area as the suspension on that corner is totally unloaded.

The takeoffs came assembled with what I was told are the sti hardend top hats front and rear. The top hats looked the same as the stock wrx ones though and I could not discern more stiffness than the stock ones manipulating the top hats by hand.

I jacked up the right rear corner of the car and gave the spring the "jiggle" test and it did not move around (side to side or up and down) between its perches.

I have double checked the tightness of the 3 tophat through body to upper parcel shelf nuts at roughly 15 ft lbs. I have also checked the tightness of the two nut/bolt assemblies holding the bottom of the assembly to the contol arms (140 ft lbs). I also have made sure that my cusco sway bar is tight in all spots (mounts and endlinks).

The sound still persists!!!!

Any ideas?

thanks,
lndbrusr

check the sides of your rear sway bar to see if they're coming into contact with the end links. some people have had problems with this, and i'd imagine it could account for the clunk that youre hearing. i'd also double check the sway bar mounts while your under there.

its possible that if your coming into the driveway hard enough to fully extend the right rear spring/strut, that the clunk you're hearing is the sway bar reaching the end of it's travel.

i'm running a setup very, very similar to yours, so if you continue to have trouble let me know. i'm in Campbell, and i'd be happy to give you a had with the problem.

I plan on taking the sway bar off tonight and see if the sound still persists.

Are you ever at the Big Dogs meet or the UCKK meet?

I am the one that always brings my dog (Bandit)
