Loss of power randomly, Check Engine light on

While I was driving to work today, my '01 2.5 RS seemed like everything shut off for a moment, blinked back on and started up again, but with the check engine light on. It was only half a second so I couldn't really tell if the engine actually stopped, but I don't think it did. Had to get to work and it was a mile away so couldn't look at anything, but it happened one more time before I made it there.
I'm fairly uninformed when it comes to issues like this, so I have no idea what it could be. I have read that it could be either the battery, the alternator, or the fuel pump. Has anyone seen this or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like something to do with the ignition components. I had something similar happen on my Acura and it was the igniter. I'd get it checked out soon. From the first time it did it to the last time it did it, which was when my car shut off while on the freeway and wouldn't restart, was about 100 miles.

From what I understand, it is ok to drive with the CEL on as long as it is not blinking. You should probably take it to somebody who can pull the code to see what error ocurred.

If it happened twice within a mile, I would be hesitant to drive it again. How old are the spark plugs? How many miles on the car? Have you changed plugs or wires ever? Fuel filter? Air filter? If all the maintenance items are good, it's probably going to be a failed sensor- MAP, O2, TPS, etc.
Did this get resolved?
I own a MY01 RS also. When I bought the car (used) the carfax reported that there was a recall on the ECM for my car and it was replaced when sold back to the dealer.
I bought it with 63k and it now has 87k and still running strong.
I would also check the ignition system. If you have a CEL pull that code.
