02 wrx > 04 wrx > 04 STI ???
im in the market for a wrx. i like the 02 models but ive noticed i can get an 04 model for only slightly more. the 02 and 04 models share the exact same engine correct?
will it be as easy to mod the 02 as the 04? if i got an 02 i am looking at doing full exhuast, hoses, and a reflash. the 04 can use the same parts as the 02 right? as far as exhaust i mean.
and then the sti. i would only be interested in a used mid-high $20k sti. besides suspension, engine, and tranny, what are some other main differences?

Yes the exhaust should be the same between the '04 and '02 WRX. ECUs are different between the two, as are some suspension parts and the interior. As far as differences between STi and WRX, you'll need to do a search. They are completely different.

modding
if you want to mod heavily, I would say get the older car, and save your money for upgrades. The main benefit of a newer car is more warranty, which you give up when you start modifying. 02 vs 04 is pretty similar for the most part.

speaking of which
what is the used rex's cost range? 02, 03, 04 (what should they be) and you said 02 and 04 is the same, what about 03? is there sumthin wrong with it? and because its an AWD it isnt really "Driftable" is it. Is it even meant for that? it IS a rally car. i would have to install aftermarket suspension wont i.

driftable
the driftable comment doesn't even justify a response. Go visit nissan240sx.com or something.
With respect to the year/cost difference, the biggest factor is going to be the miles, and condition, not the year. An 02 with 18,000 miles will most likely be more expensive than an 03 with 50,000 miles. That being said, you should be able to get into an 02 somewhere around 16, and an 04 closer to 19-20, depending, again, on miles, condition, and if it has any mods. 03, obviously, would be somewhere in between. If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much about the year, as I would about what kind of condition the car's in, who the previous owner was, if they beat on the car, etc....

The one aspect about buying a high-performance "used" car (ie, STi, EVO, 350Z, whatever) is you may never truly know it's "performance" condition, especially if you get it from a dealer and aren't able to talk with the previous owner. Lease turn-ins especially could be in bad shape internally and you'd never know. People who lease cars don't have alot of incentive to use "good" oil, "good" gas, and all that stuff and they generally run the **** out of them knowing they won't have to deal with the problems that can occur later in the cars life (for the second owner). So just be cautious. The best idea would be to take it to a dyno, especially if it's stock, and have it tested. If it's putting out an acceptable level of power, go with it. It was probably well taken care of and broken in well too. Just my 2 cents......
