It sounds like the tranny fluid is simply getting extremely hot and eventually causing the CEL. I guess at that point, the ECU probably retards performance so you don't destroy something. Perhaps an AT temperature gauge would help. Maybe there's some problem with the tranny cooler as well...

FWIW you shouldn't turn the car off when the AT OIL TEMP light comes on. You should just let it idle, that will cool it down faster than shutting it off.

THAWA's right, it needs to be running in order to circulate the coolant though the radiator.
