55,129 as of today. Clutch was replaced by the dealer at 5,400 miles for a suspicious noice. The new clutch started the clutch shudder at about 38k, and progressively worsened up until now. The shudder is so bad its hard to shift gears. Tonight im installing an Exedy OEM clutch and an ACT streetlite flywheel. Hopefully no more shudder problems with the new clutch!

As I may have said earlier, I had my clutch replaced to get rid of the "chudder" and the new one has gone about 20K with no problems whatsoever. Not even when it is cold, or when I try a bit of a hot start, etc. Who knew? Best to get all the warranty work done as soon as possible, to protect your investment. (I also got the cruise control, seat bolt and something else done on recalls: after all of that I had a timing belt tensioner go which took 3 weeks to get fixed. Oh, yea: the famous "clunk" from the rear sit. Seems something was loose, but the noise is gone. My 02 wrx now has 42K miles.
Good luck.

Not really, only a few actual recalls and they are for minor stuff- a bolt on the seat that can come loose, and adding a 50-cent clip to the cruise control cable. There have been a number of TSBs which are just service bulletins not recalls, and not just for the 02's. Of course some of those really SHOULD be recalls, such as the well-known cold weather fuel leak but that's a topic for discussion elsewhere (and it has been discussed thoroughly).
As for the topic of this thread, I'm approaching 80K on my 02 and still have the original clutch, and it feels about the same as it always has- engagement point hasn't changed much if at all, and occasionally it will have the cold shudder. I never got it replaced for the shudder because A. I don't trust any dealers to work on it, B. it isn't that bad and I don't mind living with it, and C. the full TSB repair to fix the shudder includes a heavier flywheel which I really didn't want. I figure I'll deal with it myself when and if the original clutch finally wears out although that could be a while since my previous car (non-Subaru) had 150K on the original clutch when I got rid of it and it was still ok.
Actually my car has never been back to a dealer for anything since I bought it new, I take care of everything myself.

70.5k miles on stock clutch, doing roughly 300 hp. The clutch is a little wonky due to approximately 50 launches. Getting act stage 1 installed in a week.

just curious, how much do you plan on dropping for clutch and install.....I know the clutches run around 400 for a wrx, just curious what you were quoted for install.

My car had around 65K when it went out, but it did have a ACT flywheel from the previous owner, I'm not sure at how many miles he upgraded. Recently changed the clutch at around 65K and worked great until I got stuck in the snow for about an hour and half and around 68K my clutch is slipping again. Granted, I was in need for a clutch and I bought a NAPA one....currently ordered an Spec II and waiting for it....

I believe that my '02 (bought in September 02) was one of the early ones: bug eye headlights, etc. However, there is a bright side: the cruise control works fine, the rear seat makes no more noise, I won't have to do the cam belt until 100,000 miles, the seats are firm, the clutch is smooth, it runs like the wind and it's just plain fun to drive. I still have over a year and quite a few miles before the 5-year, 60,000 drive train warranty expires. I will use Suby bucks for new tires in a few month, also.

Haven't gotten one yet, but I'm setting everything up today. I'll repost then...

haha, clutch started slipping at 49,xxx miles...I think I burned it up 8 times too many lol :-)

I have an 02 wrx wagon and paid 400 for install at GB and over $700 from subaru for the new updated flywheel (that mulder was talking about), clutch assembly, TOB, ect...oem parts from the dealer are $$$ :-(

Now that its been replaced, I forgot what it was like driving with a clutch that actually engaged! The old one was drivable, but now its like a new car, very smooth and no shudder.

I now have about 20k miles on the car and the clutch is starting to act weird.

It's not like I launch hard every time.........Just every other time! To be honest though, I had been launching hard with the car for up to about the 15k mile mark, and just recently is the clutch started to get goofy on me.

What is a really good replacement clutch for the '05 WRX?

The stock clutch. With your driving style you might consider the next step up. Either the ACT HD stage I or the Exedy Sport Stage I.

Good luck,

How much would either of those options cost?

I think normal price for either is between $400 and 450. I have seen the exedy sport for as low as $375. I would personally reccommend the ACT because I have used and owned them. But I hear very good things about the exedy as well.

Good luck,

_justin
