Would You Still Buy A Subaru??
Would You Still Buy A Subaru??
I never knew about the forums until I owned my wrx. I am in no way upset that I bought my subaru, but there are a lot of problems that do come with the subaru. SOA, tranny, etc... Knock on wood, I have not yet had these problems. I guess my question is, would you still buy that subaru again, even though you knew about these problems?

despite the problems, i don't think you can get a *better* car for $24k out the door. if i had the opportunity to do it all over again, i would've gotten the WHITE bugeye back in '02. heheh.

I still can't think of another new car I would rather purchase in the same price range, except perhaps to spend a bit more and get an STi.

The tranny on a WRX is a weak link but it was made for 227hp. Most of the guys breaking their tranny's have well over 227 and abuse it [tranny] on a regular basis. I have a 03' WRX with a TurboXS stg4 and a stock tranny, I maintain my car religiously and rarely abuse my car ( hard launched at 5k rpm+) and have never had a problem with my tranny...knock on wood.
I love my suby and cannot wait to pay it off so that I can get another.

A car is a car is a car. There is no special magic that prevents any car from having the same wear-and-tear problems as any other; you're talking about a complex machine with tens of thousands of parts, all of which must function under extreme heat, wear and pressure. The "problems" that Subarus are supposedly known for (weak tranny, wheel bearings, head/cam gasket) are by no means unique to Subaru and are common in any high-performance, high-compression engine. My father rebuilt 3 911 turbos from "blown" condition (one Targa, one Carrerra and a Turbo) and even those fine German automobiles have their own host of problems (CV boots, head gasket, leaks in the oil cooler, underbody rust, etc.). There is no bulletproof car, period.
That being said, the four Subarus that I have personal experience with have been solid, dependable cars with little or no problems. I just did the CV boots on our 98 Legacy wagon, but it lived in Oregon for 5 years and the grease probably got washed out early in the car's life; I had to replace the cam gasket seal last year, but ironically that was because the car hadn't been driven enough! The former owner had let it sit in a garage for almost two years, enough time for the seals to dry up and crack. With almost any car, you have to drive it at least once a week to keep the gaskets wet.
My 02 WRX has had zero problems of any kind; all I have done is regular maintenence and a radiator flush. My brother's 89 Loyale took a severe beating right up to 178k miles and was still running when he sold it; he took that car camping in the Cascades range and Olympic National Forest every weekend. And my mother's 98 Forrester made the trip from Eugene to Yachats every weekend for two years before she traded it in, no problems.
Personally, after driving an STI, an Acura TSX, several Hondas and an Infiniti G35 Coupe, I've got no doubt that Subaru offers the best performance per dollar; the only competition I've seen in that price range is the SRT-4, and that's a little toy car that I can't take seriously. Now that Subaru has finally wised up and decided to spend some time and money on sprucing up the interior of the car, I'm sure a Turbo Legacy is in my future, once I've modded my 02 to my satisfaction and finished sowing the last of my wild oats...

As of right now I will buy another Suby. I bought my 04 WRX sedan in October of last year and have no regrets... (Well... maybe I regret not saving a few more $ and buying and STI). I really like the cars they are putting on the market, such as the forester XT, Legacy GT, etc.
