1st Gear
1st Gear
I'm a new suby owner and i noticed something about my car in first gear when i was on the highway this week (in traffic of course). When i get on the gas in first gear (coasting along in traffic), the car seems to jump forward, and when i get off the gas it seems to jump backward (so to speak). Is there something wrong with my gear box for this to happen or is it normal.
Excuse my lack of proper terminology.

It is a high end motor that sucks in traffic.
It will take VERY good clutch skill to smooth it out. It is virtually inpossible to smooth it out though. Get good at not having to let off the gas peddle and that helps.
Edit: I actually end up with a bunch of semis creeping along behind me in traffic because I leave space so that I don't have to stop rolling. Takes some practice but easy to learn. When the trucks start lining up behind you, you know you are there because they have the same problem but WAY worse than you.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it sounds like you're just feeling slack in the drivetrain (cv's, driveshaft, etc.)
When the car is coasting, this would put the drivetrain in the middle of its "play". When you press on the gas, all the slack in various parts is taken up, and this makes the car lurch forward. When you let off the gas, all the parts go to the opposite extreme of their play before slowing down the car, making the car lurch backward.
Like I said, I might just be crazy, but this is my guess.
