What else can you get for around $30,000
i'll just buy a skyline and solve all the problems. everybody here just talks about STi this and STi that. some here make like the STi is the absolute "best" car out there. i'd think twice about that. for it's price, i'd rather buy a 350Z and slap a turbo on, or even a G35. now that's luxury and power into one for the same price as the STi, which is basically only power. hell, i'd rather buy an EVO just because it's an EVO and it's proven quality around the world, also, it comes with new turbo technology, twin-scroll turbo. i think that Mach5wrx and some of the other people here are just trying to point out that for 30K, there are many other options, but if you want to buy the STi, then power to you, however, i think i'd wait until next year. i'm rather happy with my WRX for the moment. still have a few projects on the horizon.

350Z touring + turbo + possible necessity of a cam change + engine management ( or maybe just fuel and boost management) + innercooler (good luck getting an air/air inner cooler and piping to fit) + new exhasut work = much more money than an STi and you would still be minus room to put stuff orther than one passenger (if you care). I personally love the 350, but I wouldn't buy it over an STi.
G35 is much more appealing to me now with a 6speed and LSD option. Still, getting more power just seems to big of a hassle ,the interrior is a tad to pretty for my style, and it doesn't have the characteristics I desire for autocross. If I didn't care about power upgrade potential, auto-X, or aftermrket stereo. This would be in my driveway right now....actually, the Coupe would be.
325i, you're buying a badge, but at least it looks nice and is RWD
'03 Cobra, you're buying an engine (not that I hadn't thought about it.....and still am)
RX8, better choice than a 350Z IMO, but pretty ugly pretty....if that makes any since. You either love it or hate it. I think those rear doors are more hassle than a simple 2-door, especially if you actually have 3 passengers and park bewteen 2 cars. Break-out the stop watch and time how long it takes to get all four people out of the car without touching the other two cars. PITA I bet.
Evo, nice, very nice. Of course, I don't know yet how it compares to the US STi's performance.
I personally find the STi astetically (sp?) unattractive. But not homely enough to make me overlook its other qualities. I like the Evo's look a lot more, but it would be difficult to tone it down. Delete the wing and scoop from the STi, and it will look vert civil....an be a true Hannibal Leckar of cars.

As long as we're being speculative... talking about skyline's etc...
If I'm going to have to wait till '04 for my STI, I'd also consider waiting to see what the specs for the new next gen. supra are going to be... also coming out next year some time.

yeah, i'm curious about the supra also. maybe it won't be as highly priced as the previous models, given the fact that most of these high quality cars such as the 350Z and G35 are quite affordable. i also can't wait to see nismo come out with a turbo kit for the Z. i read somewhere that their in the making. not sure what it will include, but then that car is going to kick some a$$. i just wanted to add in the skyline thing because i think that it's one of the best supercars ever made and i really wish i had one.

the sti is the best there is because it is AWD, AWD owns, the evo cant hang with the sti either, bottom line, subaru owns mitsubishi, skyline.. yes it is fast as hell but that is way more expensive than an sti, 350Z... no way it cant hang wit an sti, sti has as i said again AWD, AWD do you guys know wat can be done!?!? omg AWD baby it can bring a whole new defininition to racing, i can rev that baby up to 6500rpm and not even lose any traction compared to doing that in a 350Z, luxury will lose to rally in a race, that is the fact.
the sti is made for owning the streets, the g35 and 350Z are nice as hell too.. but if they want to race an sti, id rather be in the sti.
project WRX vs EVO7, EVO7 only beat the wrx by .01 quarter mile, and that was an EVO7 racing the little brotherWRX, wait till you mess withe big brother STI, EVO7 or 8 is going down.
ID TaKE AWD over RWD anyday, sum poeple just dont understand the true power of AWD... muahahahaha that is good for me..

In almost every review I have read in the past year, the EVO is noted as the better handling car. The EVO is about as race-car as you can get. The STi usually gets the nod as the best compromise between all-out race handling and still a livable daily driver.
I wouldn't mind owning either one and I doubt any real car driver would think one would walk over the other. They both have strengths and weaknesses but when it comes down to it, you can't put the answer down on paper: fun to drive!
Heck, my MY02 RS is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven but looking at it on paper, it looks to be just average.

even though im open minded i still believe the sti is a better car than the EVO because it has more hp, 300hp.... and much better lsd's, it has 3 lsd's compared to the EVO's 2 lsd's, wayyyy better drivetrain than mitsubishi, also.. subaru has DCCD, driver controlled center differential, which the EVO is lacking, and the subaru doesnt get #1 rally car for no reason =), so i still think the sti is the best.. after gettin the feel of my brothers 2003 wrx, id still rather have the little brother wrx than the evo8, just because the little brother has the same genetics as the big brother =) good looks. great performance. great feel. im sure if the evo comes out with new engine to counter the sti, itll be crazy but for now sti is on top in my opinion =)
well, first of all, subaru isn't the #1 rally car just because of the car, but much of the credit is due to the driver, Tommi Makinen, which i may add, drove the EVO VI as well. it's good however that you have a strong opinion about the STi and seem to be a very loyal subaru owner, i too love the STi, but both the STi and EVO are good for me. as for the AWD thing, i don't think it's very good for the 1/4 mile as compared to a RWD and FWD car. it's good off the line and that's about it. on a rolling start, i would go with the RWD and FWD cars as traction isn't as big of an issue. true, AWD is the best in terms of handling and traction during cornering, but it is proven that there are some FWD and RWD cars that can out handle an AWD car, it just depends upon the driver. for the 350Z traction thing, if you throw some slicks on that bad boy, then we'll have a completely different story.

i drove the wrx, took a turn exiting the 10 west off san gabriel, that exit.. is a complete circle you guys know how some exits are, they turn into circles.. and i took that turn off good baby,. AWD only can do that, i was going about 50mph off that exit so much adrenaline but the awd kept me alive. doubt a FWD or RWD could do that.. most likely it would drift off or spin out. throw some slicks on the WRX, now that is a diffferent story =), i doubt that some cars can out handle AWD, its ALL WHeels

No other time have I felt so much excitement since Shelby came out with their GLHS and CSX (I owned one
), Mitsu came out with their Eclipse Turbos, Toyota came out with their Celica All-Trac, MR2 and Supra Turbos, Mazda came out with their RX7 Turbos, and Nissan came out with that 300Z TT. (NOTICE how all cars above had TURBOS!!!)Granted, the 350Z and G35 are worthy competitors - but guess what? NO TURBO. Ya, you can add an aftermarket one along with intercoolers but you will be spending at least $5K+. This is no longer comparing apples to oranges. Give me that $5K+ to fix an STI and you'll see who is king. 300 stock HP is nothing to sneeze at. Coupled with AWD, usable rear seat (be envious 350Z and G35 Coupe), Japanese reliability (the opposite of US muscle cars), and rally-bred heritage, there really is very little competition.
Food for thought. I just saw a English-dubbed Japanese video called Best Motoring 6 where they compared the different generation STI and EVOs (up to 2002 models) and most agree that the STI was a more "balanced" car. This is due to the fact of the flat 4 engines lower center of gravity and symmetrical layout (it is longitudal like a RWD, unlike the transversal layout of the EVO). This equates to equal length front drive shafts and better front to back weight distribution. To compensate, there WAS more work done on the EVO to stiffen up its suspension to compensate for the loss of balance. During cornering, the EVO had to brake later and accelerate earlier in and out of curves while the STI (or Spec C) was able to corner more steadily.
