Having said that, I do get a good laugh when someone places fuel economy as a high priority item when deciding among $50k performance cars.

Excellent point there. For ALL you people that think the WRX STi is a POS and $35K is too much for a Subaru. I suggest you take your hard earn money and go buy a 325i, A4, C240, Volvo/Saab(haven't pay attention to Volvo/Saab for like the past 10 years, lost track of their model name
), or better yet how about used Boxster, used ancient Ferrari 308 GTB. There you go, go get a Ferrari and you will have all the prestige you want and everybody would think you are rich
Now is $35K too much for a Ferrari? And like Rich said, if there are less people buying the Sti, then we real car enthusiast can buy our STi at MSRP. Also making the car more rare. It would suck if everyone drive one

For me the STi is a "Dream car". It would be GREAT to have one and I can't say enough good things about subaru for bringing it here to North America. But then I started to think about owning an STi a little more deided not to buy one. This is why.....
1) I would get REALLY mad when I found little digs or scratches in my $24,000 WRX. I don't think I could take, every other day finding digs and scratches in my $32,000 or higher STi
That is just a fact of life. Whatever you drive, it doesn't stay perfect.
(This is the one that no one is going to like)
2) I'm not paying 32,000 or higher for a Subaru. This may sound really bad, but just think about it for a few minutes......$32,000 for a Subaru? Now, I know this is a Kick @ss top of the line car. But "I" can't do it, just my $.02
If you have this thought, stop now and don't need to consider the WRX Sti anymore. For me, it is worth every penny. Honestly I would pay $45K for one. Obviously you have no clue what a WRX STi is worth. It is understandable though since all these new generation Japanese sports car are new to a lot of people. It is the general thought like what you have made the Japanese car manufacturer hesitated to bring over all these wonderful cars for the past 10 years. Because they know most of us American won't pay a lot for their amazing sports car. American would rather pay $45K for a low tech, push rod, 2 valves per cylinder Corvette with leaf spring on the back

3) If I was to get the STi it would be for the performance side of the car. But how offen would I "really" get to use all that "performance". Not in day to day driving. How my times a day can I go 0-55 MPH. Maybe 12 times a year at SCCA SOLO II, if I can make all of our dates. Maybe twice a year, if that on our local "track days".
The speed limit on the freeway is 65 mph, I floor it to 75 mph everytime I get on the freeway, so I use that performance few times per trip. Not to mention I take every freeway on and off ramp at full speed to enjoy the handling of a sports car.
To all you guys that say " this car is just about performance". When are you really going to drive this car like it's made to? Or are you a bunch of "car nerds" that want to have the newest toy?
Like I said, I drive this car like it's made to every single trip that I take.
Newest toy? Cars like these, EVO/WRX STi/Skyline GTR, has been existed for over 10 years. They are such old news that it is history to us, just part of our life. To us, they are a long over due wonder we have been waiting for ages to get here.
It is either you get it or you don't.

Now for those who want a limited production car that has AWD, 300HP, 4-door, useable passenger and trunk space, and is regarded very highly in the sport of rallying and the import race car scene, the STI is for you. I, as many of you, could give a rat's *** about leather seats, nav systems, dual climate controls or yuppie me-too styling.
Who cares if you can't test your 0-60 or 1/4 mile time every freaking day? Just knowing that someday some yuppy wannabe luxury sports car owner (that paid +$10-20k more than the STI) who thinks of even being a threat at a stop light, on the freeway, or some twisty wet roads will get their asses handed to them once they taste the fury of the STI is enough for us.

No one is questioning what the STi brings to the table or saying that it is not an incredible car. I, like I'm sure anyone else on here, is a car nut. I've been very pleased with my WRX and can only imagine what it would be like to turn things up a notch with the STi. That said, it's going to be a few years before I seriously look into an STi. I know I'll be giddy once they're in showrooms, but it is certinaly not an investment to take lightly. It is certainly more risky when compared to other cars in this price range.
And it is a fair question to ask how much of the time will you be getting that extra $10-15,000 out of the car. I don't know that I'd notice it on my daily commute either. Maybe it's worth it to know you're top dog or that it's there on the rare occasion you want to race a pricey BMW.
I guess that's less of an issue with me. There are always going to be cars that can do what you can and likely for even cheaper. My brother's '96 LT1 Z28 (used, sub-$9k) will outrun my '03 WRX. The new, cheaper Neon will be just as fast. Does that mean I'm a fool for paying $22k for my car? No, as each car brings something different to the table.
The STi will be an incredible car, but it isn't for everyone. OR maybe it's that it is, but it's just not a good investment for everyone!
If you've got the extra 10k+ green to toss at the opportunity to own one, go for it! I just think there are less readers on this board that are truly in this financial position.

Try going on the Audiworld.com or Bimmer.org forums and suggest they buy an Sti instead of an S4 or an M3......for the most part you'll probably get a very derisory response, and why is that ? It's because, like most people here, they are biased towards their favourite marque..........is that so surprising ?
I think most people here are both STi nuts and performance car enthusiasts who have done their homework........I've thought about other cars in this price range (ableit fleetingly) and have even considered cars in the $45k-50k range (M3 and new S4) but I know that the STi is the right car for me. I don't want other people's opinions (that won't sway my judgement), but I do value useful information.
To be honest, if you are looking for people here to justify your purchase of the STi when you're not sure it's what you want, then you are probably destined to be disappointed.
Drive what YOU want and you'll never be disappointed.

The STi will NOT run under 11 sec.
On the Best of Motoring Video the driver test of the STi ver.8 was a 12.8 1/4 mile speed. That was with a 5 to 5.5k dump. The cars Top speed was over 160 and the driver still had 2k till redline.

I was contemplating the VW R32 for a while, until those crazy STI specs came out..
They'll be in a similar price range, but where VW has spent the money on driver comfort, Subaru has put it towards all out performance..
If the R32 had another 30-40hp or so then I probably would have gone with it..

Ok, im a 19 year old with an eclipse spyder.
I have been looking into subaru for a long time and always flip when i see wrx's on the road. I am about to put the 1,000 down payment on this car. Remember im only 19, but i have worked hard and saved for the money to buy this car, also hopeing i get around 10k for my own car.
The reason i love this car is cause its an amazing machine. Bottom line. For the price, altho high for me and some people i believe i am getting soemthing worth so much more. I waited till now because 1, i wasnt to fond of the head lights, and since having a convertable now i would like a moonroof, and also i didnt have enough cash.
I have looked at many cars around this price range. 225ci bmw, audi a4, mazda rx-8 (i think it looks awsome as hell!, but lacks too much in proformance), g35 infinity, ford mustang gt (BOO! but i looked
), and also the Evo VIII.
I know i am giving up personal goodies like navigation, leather, heated seats and in my opinion most other bs items you have to pay more for. I will do the sterio myself (im picky on music
), and im going to mod anycar i end up getting just alittle bit.
The subaru time after time beat these other cars in my head. Awd, 227- and now 300 hp, a turbo (NA cars arent as much fun), and so on.
This is a huge risk for me (money wise) but i see it as a good investment also.
P.S.- im still a kid.... u know i gonna love racing that dam thing too purely for the rush you get and seeing the other person pissed they lost to a car that cost a hump load less! so all you audi, bwm kids out there...
Be afraid and wonder why...

I also wonder what the insurance premium will be for a 19yr old driving a 300hp turbo..
I know what it's like to be in the grip of turbo lust, but if it's a huge financial risk then you shouldn't be doing this..

What, may I ask, is wrong with a low tech, push rod, 2 valves per cylinder Corvette? Hehehehe..... It's pushing 405 hp in the Z06 trim. Oh, btw, they're leaf spring both front and back (I don't see anything wrong with that either). They're one of the best handling car (in the dry surface anyway).
Not dishing the STi at all (i'm on the waiting list actually), just giving credit where it's due.
Peace.
