Fuse Problem
Fuse Problem
I have 2 POLK 12's with a pioneer amp and i did the install myself. But today they stoped hitting and my amp wasn't gettin power. I disconected everything and checked my fuse under the hood on my power cord. It was blown so i went and bought some more (there the right size, 60A) and now every time I try and slide the fuse into the plastic surge protector thing it sparks like hell. I have no idea what i've done and can't figure out what it is. I have no lose ends anywhere cause i sodered and put shrink wrap on these little circle electrical things and they screw down. So i have no idea what it could be.
Any Ideas?

maybe your amp is blown and something is shorting inside. try disconnecting the amp, and tape up the end of the positive wire(where it came off the amp) and putting in the fuse. if it blows like this, then maybe the insulation wore off/got pinched/melted somewhere along the run and is grounded to your chassis somewhere. make sure that the positive wire isnt touching the case of the amp, cause that is grounded too. it sounds like a dead short though, and not a problem with the subs at all.

Well i'm glad to hear you don't think it's the subs but my amp is brand new. I HIGHLY doubt it is that. And yes i made sure the stero and car were off when i was tryin the fuse. I been shocked before and it taught me a lesson. But, I think the next thing i might try is disconecting the power cord from the amp and seeing if it still shorts. The i guess i can narrow it down to either the cord or the amp. O...and how bad do u have to shcok the metal attachments to the power cord inside the plastic surge thing for them to be fried. I burnt them pretty bad....
thnx

just sand down the connectors for the fuse if they are too charred. they dont easily come off of the wire though, and it takes a lot of burning to make them not work.
Ok well now i really don't know whats going on. I disconected my power cable from the amp and tried to put the fuse in the surge protector and again all i got were sparks. I thought mabye its spliced somewhere along the line but i can't imagine why that would make it spark. Any ideas?
that is good news, that means your amp is good.
somewhere on the line, the insulation has come off and is contacting metal. you need to take out the power wire and put in a new one. or if you can find the spot that it is touching, tape it or heat shrink it or do something to re-insulate it.
when you installed it, did you make sure it was not run over anything sharp or run through somewhere it can be pinched?

I did a pretty simple install with the power cord....i went throguh the fire wall and i have a feeling it may be there. Other than that i can't think of where else it would ever come in contact with metal. Mabye under one of my seats but i guess i'll just have to look around. But you think if i can find where its been spliced or where it is touching metal i could just throw some shrink rap on and fix it??? I really don't want to have to buy a new cable. DOn't have the extra $ right now.
Thnx

yeah, should be no problem. just electrical tape it real good, and fix what caused the short(sharp metal, pinching, gas eating through it, whatever) and it will be fine
This time, make sure you insulate it well...Short circuits and cars don't mix...My friend had a Rustang (Mustang) with a similiar problem to yours, except the fuse wasn't always sparking; it would do it intermittently. I told him he should check for a short, but he was too lazy to. Finally, he got fed up with the fuse blowing, so he just REMOVED THE FUSE ALTOGETHER and wire it straight through. A week later he was driving when he heard a funny zapping sound coming from his trunk...Followed by smoke a short time later. The short circuit set his trunk carpet and sub box on fire!
And, after all that, he finally learned his lesson.

Ehh.... i've been kinda lazy lately. I'm more worried about buying a friends Ninja500R. But i riped a few things open the other day and couldn't find anything. I may just cough up the $ and have someone do the install. But i found a place that won't make me buy all new cords so shouldn't be more then like $75. I'll let u kno if i find anything out.
