hard wiring radar detector
does anyone know if the auto dimming rearview mirrow wire has enough power for me to hook up a wire from my radar detector?
this way i dont have to take any panels off to run a wire to my ignition switch or something...
thanks

All circuits in your interior carry 12 volts, so the detector will run off it. What you need to do is make sure that you aren't exceeding the amperage rating for the circuit. Chances are, the circuit will carry the unit and the mirror just fine.

"wireless radar"
i don't have an auto mirror but what i did do to make my radar detector wireless is run a hidden wire down to my center colsole. I took the clip on the back of the cigarette lighter off to use a an on/off power source. From that, i wired my cigarette lighter to the battery (including proper fuse) so i have power on my cigarette lighter always on (helps to charge cell phones and whatnot).
I mounted my radar above the rearview. This way i get to use it and not get a ticket for obstuction of view.

I have a Uniden that I tucked up to the left of the mirror, just below a windshield banner. I had Custom Car Sounds tap into the wires from the now non-functional clock (replaced with a police scanner speaker, with grille cloth across the face, looks nice), and also wired in an electronic compass on the other side of the mirror. They charged twenty bucks, and did it in about 15 minutes. Looks really cool.
Might post pics later.

I installed my V1 over the rearview mirror. The phone cable/power cord is tucked under the headliner, runs down the A-Pillar and into the left side of the dash where the fuse box is. Plenty of room to completely hide the cable.
I added a fuse tap to the cigarette lighter for power. There was a gold phillips screw on the left side of the dash for good ground. Unfortunately, the fuse tap protrudes too far to allow the coin holder to close properly. I don't use it anyway, so I just cut off the back nice and clean with a dremal and moved the fuse diagram to the inside of the fuse holder. Looks completely stock closed, but when opened it looks like an over-engineered flip out fuse cover.

Just wondering why you put it in such an open place?? Most cops harass people who have these. I hid mine up right beside the mirror, just below a windshield banner, where you have to look from inside the car to see it.
If you can't draw enough voltage from the auto-dimming mirror circuit, running a wire up the a-pillar and down thru the dash is a cake walk. I have a teenie blacklight installed on the windshield right in front of the headliner above the mirror. It isn't noticable, except for the glow. Anyway, you can use the map light for a negative ground, so all you'll have to run is one wire.
BTW, IS300, you have some nice a** rides! How can ya afford that? I'm barely able to afford my subie alone.
