arg. People in this class are getting confused with the difference between subnets and subnet masks and how they work.

I'm also looking at this laptop right now:
Dell Vostro 1500 $549
- intel 2 duo t5270 1.4ghz 800mhz fsb/2mb cache
- 2gb ddr2 ram
- 160 gb hdd
- 8x dvd+rw

Those are the main things I'm concerned about since I don't play videos games really anymore on my PC and any that I do play are a few years old anyways. I'll probably format the laptop and put my xp pro on there. What do you guys think? Honestly...I just do hw, music, watch videos, browse online and thats about it with my computer so I figure I'd buy a laptop and consolidate space and when I move on out I won't have to lug a big computer with me.
you cant afford a nas but your buying a a whole PC? a 2tb nas is like a grand..... or buy one of the nas cases and drop your own drives in

Well my priority is a new laptop. I don't require a NAS atm. I have my other hdd's I'd still like to make use of and just use in external hdd cases instead or a drop in NAS box like you stated. I'm going to use my current hdd's until they crap out because for the time being I don't need to get rid of perfectly good hdd's or have the need to get bigger/faster hdds. I may consolidate them to one larger hdd over time, but not right now.

Its easy.

One is a subnet, the other is a mask for the subnet.

Now a guy in here, who yesterday said he's been doing UNIX for 13 years, didn't know how to find the major and minor number of a device

Okay, here's an idea. Setup your PC in the garage attached to your network with the drives shared. Boom, insta-NAS! (unless you were planning on selling the PC)
