Hey Furley...

If someone offered me this much weed, how much work would it get them?

I'm also looking at this laptop right now:
Dell Vostro 1500 $549
- intel 2 duo t5270 1.4ghz 800mhz fsb/2mb cache
- 2gb ddr2 ram
- 160 gb hdd
- 8x dvd+rw

Those are the main things I'm concerned about since I don't play videos games really anymore on my PC and any that I do play are a few years old anyways. I'll probably format the laptop and put my xp pro on there. What do you guys think? Honestly...I just do hw, music, watch videos, browse online and thats about it with my computer so I figure I'd buy a laptop and consolidate space and when I move on out I won't have to lug a big computer with me.
Laptops suck.

Just get a cheap mobo & case and put all your HDD's in there & have a little file server

If you can swing it, I'd get a faster processor. You can add RAM later but changing out your proc may be impossible (or very cost-prohibitive). It'd be better to spend $100 or so more now and not have to worry about it.

Also, watch out with laptops that come with Vista. Sometimes the hardware they use (integrated components on the mobo like vid/net/sound, for example) don't have an XP driver and you'll find that you can't go back.

Eh...well I don't do anything super important where I would need a desktop and its just obviously easier to transport if I need to. I may make a little file server out if it....I've always tinkered with that idea. Run something simple on it like leave xp on it.

I plan on moving sometime this up comming year and my job may require me to move from time to time so having a big heavy desktop to transport wouldn't be ideal and I wouldn't trust my stuff to just be in the hands of others. I could actually get the laptop probably for $100 cheaper so it would be worth it to me to consildate.

The ONLY thing I require is that I want to keep the dual monitor function and with the other VGA port there I can still retain my other monitor if I choose.

Well right now my desktop runs 1gb of DDR400 and thats sufficient for me, so Ram isn't an issue and I'd be happy with the 2gb it comes with. The processor won't of course be as fast as my 3.2ghz P4 H/T 1mb cache, but it will still get the job done. I may think about getting a faster processor possibly and if I really do need to.

I'm not dead set on this laptop, but this model with the current specs certainly meets and exceeds my requirements. I'll look into it more soon, but as for now...LUUUUNCH!

Right now I have 4 drives, but will only use 3 of them as external hdd's.
btw - the hdd's are IDE & I'd prefer the case to have either USB 2.0 or Ethernet.
I had limited time, so I didnt look at any specs

It's a work puter, we don't need no stinkin' patches!

Actually, EDS controls each release of XP patches, and they haven't pushed any out in that timeframe.

That's the point I was making. 2gb of RAM will be sufficient for your needs, but trust me, that proc is sorta slow. I have a 1.66GHz core 2 duo in my laptop and I wish it had a bit more juice, and I'm not doing gaming or anything. This is my work machine.

What I'm saying is, getting a faster processor at build time is much cheaper and easier than dealing with trying to do it later on (if you even can).

That **** pisses me off. I want to buy a new PC next month but I don't ****ing want Vista but Dell doesn't offer an option to build out the model I want with XP. I'm getting non-integrated video and sound, but I'm worried about the integrated ethernet and some other devices onboard that may hose me up if I go back to XP

Doesn't Dell know whether they have XP drivers available for integrated components on their own computers?

The mobo manufacturers all still make xp drivers for all their boards, just find the model number of your mobo & go to the manuf. site.
