With how much I earn and the way my budget is, if my cat/dog/lizard/snake/fish/bird/pig/goat/spider/etc. is going to cost me more than $200, I will have to put it down, I will seriously not like it, and I would cry for days because I love my pets, but $9000 would cost me my car, house, food and possibly my job and that's just out of the question.
However, I've also lent friends hundreds of dollars to help with surgeries on pets when needed because I'm not comfortable with the idea that an animal would suffer due to lack of funds. It's just where I'm coming from. I don't expect everyone to be the same, I just see it as an issue of compassion for what effectively is a family member after a while. I consciously don't have large animals becuase I couldn't necessarily afford large surgery when it came up, and I wouldn't want to be in that position.
