A kid ran over my dog with a motorcycle. Broke her back. Vet said "a lot of people would put her down, but if you're willing to work with her, she might be able to walk again." She was in a cart for 3-4 months, but we got her walking again. That was 2000, she finally succumbed to kidney failure late last year.
That's 6 years of time with a loyal animal who looks up to you. How can you put a price tag on that?
I know there's a limit, and I know you can't put tens of thousands into an animal that can't tell you what's wrong, but god, you can't just put down an animal because you'd rather buy mods or some ****.

one of my cats (badger) cost me a pretty penny when he got an internal abcess after being fixed. grand total on that one was about $900 to have diagnosed and repaired. best cat evAr though, and glad we spent the money.
one sucky thing about cats though, especially in rescued cats, is that they carry around all kinds of viruses that can flare up occasionally. my oldest cat (silvia) had a virus flare up that made her eye all cloudy and wierd looking. after many $$ of testing and crap, turns out you just have to wait it out and it will go away. scott and aaron may remember that little incident... the pirate cat.
btw, she used to be the biggest turd as a kitten and has now grown up to be the sweetest cat.

Pet insurance is worth it as soon as you get into having multiple bigger animals. Even one animal can break the bank, but if you've got a couple, it just means peace of mind for any big stuff that happens.

My parents spent several thousand on their dog Sydney to have surgery and chemo on a tumor. I agree with Aaron, a pet is like a member of the family, but I don't think they should be treated on quite the same level humans.
But my parents almost treat her as a kid though, she loves chasing remote controlled cars, so they bought her a $200 electric AWD car that has 4 wheel independent suspension and differentials for Christmas (not the one pictured below).
