No ****. It's a member of your goddamn family, you take care of it unless there is no other choice and the animal's quality of lfe would suffer horribly even if you did do everything you could.

A kid ran over my dog with a motorcycle. Broke her back. Vet said "a lot of people would put her down, but if you're willing to work with her, she might be able to walk again." She was in a cart for 3-4 months, but we got her walking again. That was 2000, she finally succumbed to kidney failure late last year.

That's 6 years of time with a loyal animal who looks up to you. How can you put a price tag on that?

I know there's a limit, and I know you can't put tens of thousands into an animal that can't tell you what's wrong, but god, you can't just put down an animal because you'd rather buy mods or some ****.

no dont talk to ME about large vet bills.... my dog has:

eaten a bottle of exedrin: stomach pump + charcole

drank his weight in beer: stomach pump + charcole

eaten broken glass: numerous xrays, anti-biotics, and a doggy colonoscopy

eaten a lighter: the meds helped it come out in only 2 peices

scratched his cornia: after hours charge >_<

chewed off a massive wart on his leg that was veined: 12 hours of bleeding in my house til the vets could do surg.

those were each about 600 a peice, thus are the only ones worth mentioning. unles syou own a ferret or an exotic bird i can almost guarantee ive spent more at the vet. note, this is in a two year period since i got the dog in feb 05 and doesnt include nuetering and complications from that.

*edit* seeing the dog totally ****faced was worth #2 even tho it wasnt planned. hes a crafty ****er

Yeah i think it all depends on what your animal means to you.. if its something you just got maybe put it down but if its an animal you love & consider part of the family its worth the money.
