He doesn't live in a dorm room

...and I never got into CSI... saw a couple though. Not too shabby. Sex change in a storage unit sounds a bit sketch.

100 dollars an hour aint for ****s and giggles bud..

he may data log and "road dyno" for free but dont kid yourself he does it for multiple reasons.

1. The more data he has the better off he is and the more he can learn from others.

2. He wants to build a relationship with people, offering them free **** is the best way to do it

3. read number one over and over and over again

hardly for ****s and giggles

Dont think i have ever heard of ANY tuner giving away free data logging of peoples tuned cars..

hell i dont think i have ever heard of ANY TUNER offering that as a service.. ESP on cars that were tuned by other tuners.. that is a big no no... ESP in such a tight knit community as this one..

No offense to the tuners, but it's not exactly rocket science. I don't see intellectual property as being a big issue here. "Stealing" eachothers' maps doesn't seem like a huge concern, because every single car is different, even with identical setups.

Let me make sure I have the basic tuning process understood:

Scale the injectors properly so it runs and idles and everything like stock. On a conservative boost and timing map, get the A/F ratio to do what you want. Most Subaru tuners shoot for 10.8:1 or so across the board. No secret here. After you've got that, work on the boost curve so it does what you want. This will depend on setup and turbo and gas. Most people with upgraded turbos on pump gas seem to shoot for 18 or so psi. I personally believe ~ 18 is the most you should run on an EJ205 on a daily basis if you want it to last you a long time and not suffer from ovaled cylinder walls and ring failure because of it. So, you get it to hit 18 as soon as possible, hold it, and taper it as it goes over 5500 rpm or so. During this time you're keeping an eye on the A/F curve to make sure it's staying where it should, as changes in boost can affect it. Once you've got that, you get as much timing as you safely can out of the car. You see teeny signs of knock and you either pull back the timing slightly or add a touch more fuel in that spot.

It's like four steps and all you're doing is attempting to adjust things so the car will, as closely as possible, hit values that have been pre-determined and do not change tuner-2-tuner.

If Ed used maps that he had stolen to create his own, he would have started with the map on my car and just tweaked it. Remember, it was already tuned with the VF22 on it.

He didn't do that. He started basically from scratch, from a conservative VF34 base map he had made. He changed the scaling on my STI pinks because they tend to vary a bit from the factory, and he went from there. Did everything completely on his own, and I watched him. He definitely has a complete understanding of the EcuTek software, IMVHO.

Again, if he did what was claimed he would have simply tweaked my existing map, and that's not what went on. BTW -- it's not like tuners start with blank tables anyway. My original VF22 tune done by a highly-respected (and talented) Bay Area tuner began from a base VF34 map as well. You gotta start with something.

I don't think any of these tuners have anything to hide. They're all attempting to do the same thing on the same cars with the same software. "Trade secrets" don't seem to exist...

I can envision the day when we dial to Bangledesh, plug our ECU to a phoneline, and data is logged, downloaded, a custom made map is installed, and we are on our way. Many other ECU technologies started with the idea that one needed to have a location and expert knowledge to sell the technology, now one can by a cell phone, computer, or whatever from Wally-world.

And that is the problem right there. Quality has been lost. You can see it everything that is made today. Streamlining the sales process never means you end up with a better product. Attention to detail in any product is more important than making the product simple to purchase.
