Dre -- this stuff is really out of hand. The accusations you're making are unfounded. Ed deserves absolutely none of the flack he's receiving on the board here from all of you fanboys of other tuning businesses.
With no experience whatsoever of Ed or what he does, you don't have the right to say what you're saying about him.
Offering free logging is a really nice gesture, and it's a great way for him to meet and get to know prospective clients. I can assure you that he does, IN NO WAY, need to see anybody elses' maps to know how to tune a car. He is more than fully capable of perfectly tuning a vehicle from scratch. Ed has a very deep understanding of the full functions and capability of EcuTek software as well as how to implement it. He knows how to tune a car. He also knows how to write software. He has made custom engine management solutions for other cars and for the WRX. He wrote the road dyno software, which is incredibly impressive and surprisingly accurate.... it's not as repeatable after long time periods maybe as a roller dyno in a shop, but getting numbers isn't what it's used for as much as it is a tuning tool to see before-and-after improvements. Anyway, the road dyno is really inconsequential.
The important thing is how adept he is at tuning. He's good. He's very good.
I've had three different tunes on my car. Nobody takes the time to make it perfect like Ed does. He cares about his customers' cars more than most of his customers do. He tunes and adjusts things that other shops simply don't do just for lack of time and concern. For instance, he modified the partial throttle maps, which suck from the factory. I had no clue they were so bad from the factory. Looking at a graph of the timing maps though, it's quite apparent. I thought the car was just a touch rough under partial throttle acceleration--out of boost--because it's a boxer engine. Nope. Without him even telling me, I felt a difference right away. The car drives smooooth and it feels more powerful at partial throttle. It's really smooth. I feel like I've traded the Subaru in for a Lexus. No joke. He custom-tuned the throttle sensitivity to my liking, and custom-tuned the startup throttle correction so it wouldn't dip to nearly stalling like it has done since the installation of my really light flywheel. NOBODY else takes the time to do these things. And it's worth it. More than worth it.
I could not be happier with how my car runs. I truly and honestly believe that there is no possible way whatsoever that I could have a better tune on my car.
Ed deserves the chance to prove to you that he knows what he's doing. All of you. Do not pass judgement because of some internet flame war BS. It's easy to pick on the small guy, and it's hard to admit that maybe the person who tuned your car messed up or didn't take the time they should have, because that means you spent money on something that isn't perfect. It's hard to admit that not only to other people, but even to yourself. It's funny how people will argue to the death whatever product they have on their car... until they change it for something else. It's just hard to come to terms with the fact that there may have been a better option.
Give Ed a chance, you wont be sorry.
Jeremy
btw -- please restrain yourselves from posting completely unqualified remarks as to my association with Ed. I am a paying customer of his. I get no kick-backs from him, and he's not my gay lover (although he is dead sexy!!!
). I've had my car since '98. I've had the WRX engine in it since 2 years ago. I've had the ECU tuned by three different people, including Ed. I've watched four different people tune Subaru's. I have nothing to gain from stating what I said above, which is the straight truth.
...speaking of which, Ed is a very forward guy. He speaks what he means and he's honest and up-front. More so than you would ever expect. Some of the accusations I have seen on this forum completely shock me, and I know for a fact that many of the larger ones are complete falsities. If I were a lawyer I would sue you for libel... and you would deserve it.

As stated earlier, all this is mainly because some of the members believe that he was trying to steal business from S-S. Nobody ever questioned his tuning capabilities, with the exception of Ali G. So far, he has not blown up an engine like some of the "bigger" tuners have. So this is more issue of business ethics and ediquette rather than who can make the best tune. Everybody has there own preferences about a tuner and almost everybody on this board saw him coming off as a threat. From what he says, that wasn't his intention and that's is completely believable until you come to the point of where he posted this on a public forum. Almost everybody here goes to S-S and ofcourse they will defend their tuner/shop from a threat that they see. It would have worked out better if he had done it first in private and then maybe posted about how the both of them worked together as a team to fix the problem. Now that would have gotten him business.

^^^ that makes sense topnotch. Thanks for that post, I definitely understand what's going on better now.
Obviously he's in the same market as SS though, so any attempts on his part to get clients could very well be seen as an attempt to 'steal' them from SS, which is the established company in the area. Understandable.
I don't really see it as an ethics thing though. It's his right to solicit his services and SS' obligation to attempt to keep their customers. If people are happy with SS, they will stay with them. If SS is doing its job, Ed shouldn't be a threat. I get calls from Sprint asking me to switch when I'm a happy AT&T customer. I see ads on TV telling me to drink Pepsi but I'm a happy Coke drinker. Every ad you see on TV is an attempt to 'steal' customers from that company's competitors. That's the way of things. This whole tuning thing is no different, IMHO.... SS ain't gonna go out of business. You guys are lucky and should be happy you now have two options in the Sacramento area!!!

how are they unfounded.. he is iming people offering them free stuff so he can data log their tunes.. all under the guise of "helping them out"..
While your at it go ahead and take off that prototype hks turbo kit and have jigs made up for it so you can sell it here in the states...
lets get this straight fan bois.. im not trashing his tuning, (i did trash him before for not using a wideband while tuning, he now has a wideband.. which is good for you guys). I am trashing the way he conducted himself on this forum in regards to this matter.
What ****ing tuner would hosts pictures, documents, and post on a public forum about how they think some other tuner made a mistake and how much more l33t they are then everyone else...
Its bull**** ed needs to figure out how the **** to integrate with people.. He cam off as a total douche during this whole episode.. And guess what, people such as myself have called him out on it. He could be the ****ing god of tuning for all i care, but if he acts like a douche i am going to call him a douche. And well guess what he acted like a douche, and continues to act like a douche.
I mean come on who the **** calls up one of my buddies and tries to get him to shut me up? WHO? Slick move dip****.. Didnt work just made me think you were even larger of a douche
And he has the time to do that level of tuning because of two things
1. He doesnt have that many customers yet
2. He might as well spend that much time on it, becuase he aint got **** else to do because he prob isnt taking classes this summer..
Like i said before, im not knocking his ability to tune, im knocking his ability to interact with people in a social enviroment, that and his actions and posts on this very forum.
Being a technical genius doesnt mean ****, now being a good techie and having people skills will get you a **** load farther in life.

and if i was a lawyer i would angry pirate your *** for being yourself.
Again if it is all lies, lets see what he has to say about what i have said here.
He IS AIMING PEOPLE OFFERING THEM FREE DATA LOGGING AND ROAD DYNOS.. And i find it interesting who is choosing to AIM with those offers..
Rather fishy

man you guys are a crazy bunch. I don't see anything wrong with a business offering "free stuff", isn't that supposed to be good for consumers? So whats the big deal? And okay, stealing customers??? If the shop is good, there is no stealing . . . I don't think said person, went to any WRX owners put a gun to his head and told him'her that he has to go with his tuning . . . Offering a competive product is not stealing . . . Running a business is cut throat, you gotta do what you gotta do . . .

The point here is that Ed does not know what he is doing and he is trying to convince people that he does and he is also trying to use the little bit he does know to poison them against another shop (the crap in the chili if you will) and that is where the issue is here.
I do no think that any one of us has a problem with competition, it is good for all of us because it keeps prices down to some degree. There are several tuners within a few hours of eachother around here and you do not see the "good" ones bad mouthing the others or trying to make them look bad do you?
