I don't think he had to get lifted out. I think he was still clipped, but not sure exactly what happened. He didn't think he did anything more than his ankle at first, but he ended up with spiral fractures of the tibia and fibia. He'll post the xrays once he's home, he said they're pretty wicked looking.....

I did my test ride of FH Loop and Connector yesterday. I felt good, but I was a bit chicken on the tricky turns and downhills. So I think I'm healed enough to ride with you guys again.
The other good news is that the poison oak is turning yellow and losing it's leaves.
Is anybody planning on riding this weekend? I'm sure going to miss Matt.

Hi, guys, I'm home. Yeah..my leg is pretty trashed.
We were riding HITG and had reached the dirt road at the end (about 4 miles from the end of the ride). We had just started going down the hill towards the singletrack steps and I had some good speed - probably between 20 mph and 25 mph.
As you're going down, there's a small rock jump on the right side of the road. Against my better judgement, I decided to hit it. The people behind me said I got a lot of air, but almost immediately was sideways.
When I landed, I came down sideways and the bike just washed out from under me. As I went down, I heard a popping noise and immediately knew what had happened. The two people behind me came up and asked if I was ok and I just said "no, I think I broke my ankle" and I crawled off the road.
The people we were riding with were actually a group of people my neighbor, Joe, and I had met at the 8,000 foot summit that day. Real nice group of people; One is a ski-patrol medic, one was retired CHP, one was an amateur frame builder (riding a frame had finished building the day before). Nice group.
Just after I fell, there were three people behind me - the ski-patrol person (her name is Sonna), the retired CHP and a guy who had been riding that day (though not with us) who was an off-duty paramedic. They got me all set up, said my leg definitely seemed broken and were trying to figure out how I'd get out of there when we heard a motor - just then a guy pulls up on a quad!
The guy on the quad is actually the owner of the dirt road and a ranch out there (he also has a home in Sac where he lives most of the time) and he drove up to his place, got his truck, came back and picked me up. Then he drove me to my car, and Joe drove me to the hospital in Truckee.
I stayed at the hospital in Truckee for about an hour - they took xrays and gave me some drugs (morphine and delovidid). Because they aren't a Kaiser hospital, I was given the option to come to a Kaiser facility in Sac, which I chose. I spent the last two days being doped up, prodded and set up at Morse Ave this week.
I was supposed to have surgery last night, but my legs were too rashed up and the surgeon didn't want to risk a bone infection in my leg from operating through all my cuts. I'll end up in surgery next week, when they'll put two plates in my ankle and some screws.
I broke my fibula, tibula and my ankle. And they're spiral breaks. My doctor says I can start on a stationary bike in probably three months, maybe on my road bike again in 6 months and at least 9 months to a year before I'm back on my mountain bike. So I guess I can start riding seriously again in March
.
My bike seems ok..my rear wheel is bent, tire is flat, front derailleur may need some adjusting and the chainrings may have a slight bend. Luckily I'll have a lot of time to get it all repaired :\
So far the pain hasn't been too bad. The way I see people scream and moan whenever they break a bone (on tv, youtube, etc) I thought for sure it would hurt like hell. As you'll see in the pics below, I was still smiling and joking around - I had almost no pain, which was amazing. I'm pretty lucky for that I think. I'm hurting a little now, but it's about time to hit up my pain killers again - I've got 175 percocets
So I hope you dudes have a good summer of riding. I guess I'll see you again next year
Here's some pics from the ride - good ole Joe snagged my camera and got some pics.
Me laying on the ground, waiting for the truck to come get me. My new friends are in the background there:

My leg. Nice, huh? See that red rash on my ankle there? That's where the surgeon needs to cut to put my plates in.

I don't think my foot is supposed to go that way..

All set up on the couch. I got home and Josey had cleaned the house, got me a bunch of food and had my little stereo by the couch, a bunch of stuff saved on the Tivo, my laptop, my book, etc <3:

My x-rays. You can see the breaks spiraling up :\

Well, since it is going to be like a year until I can ride again, I sort of considered selling it and replacing it with an '08 Epic when I can start riding again. I won't though - some stuff on my bike is going to need repair so we'll see what I can do. Maybe a new wheel set, new derailleurs/shifters and maybe some aesthetic goodies

Let me know if you want to ride this weekend. I'll be working on the house all weekend, but I should be able to sneak away for a morning ride Sat or Sun.
