on pre-08 supposedly they don't do anything till 350-400whp from what i've read. On 08+ they help a lot and give some decent gains even at stock power levels.

It depends on the intake and the tune. I can tell you that mine made a difference in power and spool.
I know a guy selling an SPT intake and if I was driving around a wrx without one I'd buy it right now considering how cheap it is.
There have been years and years of people arguing over intakes because when the wrx first came out it was a lot of peoples first mods... like hondas. And it wasn't necessary and often hurt the performance of the car and many of them are a PITA to tune for.
There are very few I'd even consider being worth anything. So it depends on what your end goal is.

I've personally seen a 25WHP gain from an intake on an otherwise stock car.

Yeah... its all about goals and choice. Go slamming some POS on there and it can be a huge mistake. Get a good one and it can be a huge help.
The funny thing is that when you get to the higher HP ranges you'll want even more because one of the pinch spots is the intake and the MAF itself. You can max them out.
I think the cobb and the spt are both huge improvements and beneficial for most folks. Race car... go custom. LOL!
I've had mine on the car for about 150,000 miles by the way. LOL!

I would stay away from CAI. Personal preference. I like the SPT and Cobb. Just don't skimp and get a cheap on. I installed a Blitz SUS intake without the mounting bracket, didn't know it's supposed to have one. It rubbed a hole in the power steering line and almost burned my car to the ground at Mt Hammy '06.

He had it on his car and I don't think it made it past break in.
That's the route I'd go. You saw that picture I posted up. I SMASH through water and don't even think twice about it.

Honestly man... if you want one. Contact IPOZESTU. He has the SPT with a super low miles filter and the heat shield. I bet you could get the whole set up for $100. I'll even pick it up and bring it to salinas if you want.
