Rick's has been working on Subaru's FOREVER. In Santa Cruz there are only two places I ever refer people and it's Rick's and the dealership.
Are you just looking to have your motor repaired? I honestly don't know how they are at building engines but it might be worth talking to them. They're really good people. Maintenance and general repairs they're great.
If you need a new motor I'd get upgraded pistons and rods while you're in there along with a new pick up. There's a dude selling stock bore pistons for mad cheap. If you have the money it might be worth just getting a fresh short block... stock ones are pretty cheap and built ones go for under $3k these days for moderate builds. Then you can repair yours and flip it to get as much money back as possible. Be less down time and doing short blocks on your car is easy since you don't need to mess with the heads.
Oh and if you isht is down for the next meet I'll pick you up and you can ride shotgun in my POS.

This is the best price I've seen for stock replacements.... I may actually have to get one or at the very least call Mike and see what his prices are.
Sale on EJ257 Blocks! Free Shipping on Cosworth and Cobb parts +SPT, Perrin, Blitz!!! - NASIOC
If they still have it this is a pretty solid deal.
2.5L Short-Block $2900!!! Manley Rods/Pistons ACL Bearings - NASIOC
I think I might call Mike or Paul and see what it'll run to get a similar build from them. I just need to decide if I'm keep ej20 heads or getting a long block.

Oh and if you're doing a built motor and having a shop do the work I'd try to get the motor through them... so GST or FW.
I'm probably going to do the work myself but I'll get as much of the parts as I can through local vendors... if not all of it.

If you need a lift anywhere let me know.
Rick's is honest and I've sent a few people there. A former co-worker of mine has been going there for probably years. I'm pretty sure Rick used to be an SOA tech then went solo.
GST... or at least Mike is on his way to Florida. GTA event this weekend. I'm not sure who's minding the shop but you could probably get someone tomorrow morning.
Yeah... good idea to have your motor built by who's gonna tune it. Good luck.

It depends on a lot. If you're just getting a short block done...
Figure on the cheap side $2000 for the block. Then you need gaskets and all the timing stuff. Another $1000 if you do everything... $600 on the cheap side. Plus labor.
You're talking $4-5000 for a short block depending on what short block you do and what other parts you do.
Now if you need heads, clutch, etc. Goes up.
I'd expect to pay $5-7000.
The costs I've been flushing out are around $7000 for me. That's with a new clutch, slightly built block and new heads.
You could probably do just a block for $4000.

If the second opinion says it's toast I'd just buy another one to minimize down time. Sell your as a builder block or rebuilt it yourself and sell it.
