Angry Damaged windshield... repair vs. replace?

The windshield on my '05 Legacy GT was hit by a rock this morning on the H1 in Pearl City. Got a nice golfball-sized crack on the drivers side that does not obstruct my view.

My insurance company (Liberty Mutual) says they'll pay for the repair & that if I'm not satified I can then get it replaced. Thing is my deductible is $500 (comprehensive).

I called Safelite & they will have someone sent to my workplace to repair the crack today. Their standard is that if it is smaller than a dollar bill it can be repaired. I have serious doubts that the end result will be aesthetically pleasing to the eye... but since it's free I'll give it a try. I do realize the intent of the repair is to maintain the integrity of the windshield & prevent the crack from spreading.

If I do end up getting it replaced.... does anyone have any suggestions of where to take my car? I'm thinking I can get it replaced for under $500 so I'll just pay out of pocket. I have the limited version, so it has the heating elements... but I don't think I really need those in Hawaii anyway, so hopefully it won't be as expensive as getting an OEM windshield. Do I, or should I, need a new gasket?

Thanks for the advice. I called Ace Autoglass and they didn't have my type of windshield & said they wouldn't be able to bring it in.

So did you get Safelite to come out and fix the crack?
I'm interested in what you've found, because I too got hit by a rock, ..
My 06 STI has received a few minor rock chips (no cracking) before, but i now have a crack that is obscured from my view behind my rear-view mirror, but... I would still like to get it fixed...

last thing Ace told me was that they 'could' get my glass,.. but it's something like 2K + .... for now I have some glossy scotch tape over it to try to keep the dust/dirt/crap out of it while I figure out how to get it repaired/replaced. The damage is just a little smaller /or about the size of a quarter...

LMK how you proceed... I'll probably have to do the same

thanks in advance.

I decided to get the windshield replaced. I only called 3 places and Safelite was the cheapest. It cost my nearly $500, but that's because the Legacy GT LTD windshield has a heating element on it & the tinted strip. I probably don't really need the heating element, but figured it was only a little over $100 more than the windshield w/o it... so why not get something as close to OEM as possible.

I would imagine the STI windshield (after market) will be cheaper than what I paid. I was happy with the work Safelite did (this is the 2nd time I've had to use them... the 1st time it was for my Honda).

If the crack on my windshield was just a hairline I might have just had it repaired.... but b/c it was so big & very noticable, I decided it would be a waste of time (for Safelite & myself) to get it repaired since I wouldn't be happy with the lack of any cosmetic improvements.
