Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Ticking

Anyone know what causes that aweful ticking in subarus? is it a belt issue or valves or what? I have an 02 2.5rs and my dad has a 01 Outback they both do the same thing, as well as most of the other subarus we test drove before purchasing. Seems to do it more when you first start it.

My 98 RS does this as well. My first fear was a sticking lifter, but the ticking doesn't seem to follow the engine rev.

Any knowledgable (sp?) engine gurus out there have any ideas?

I've just always heard that Subarus have "valvetrain clatter". It doesn't seem to be an issue.

Most likely the injectors. They tick quite loudly. Mine always ticks kinda like a small exhaust leak. Brian

The ticking after the car is started could be piston slap, if it was cold. That means it should somewhat go away after it has warmed up.
The ticking after the car has been shut off is the exhaust pipe. Heat expands the metal so as it cools down the pipe is actually contracting, making it tick.

It almost seems like its a timing belt issue or something, its always the same pattern even if you give it gas.
