Ticking
Anyone know what causes that aweful ticking in subarus? is it a belt issue or valves or what? I have an 02 2.5rs and my dad has a 01 Outback they both do the same thing, as well as most of the other subarus we test drove before purchasing. Seems to do it more when you first start it.

I was troubled by the "ticking", even took it to the dealer, they said it was OK. I have heard of people having a bad belt tensioner causing noise + problems when it goes bad but otherwise I think it is pretty typical. Funny thing is that after I got my Cobb CAI and exaust it doesn't bother me any more

The ticking after the car is started could be piston slap, if it was cold. That means it should somewhat go away after it has warmed up.
The ticking after the car has been shut off is the exhaust pipe. Heat expands the metal so as it cools down the pipe is actually contracting, making it tick.
