Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Question Power Project 2.2L (Help Wanted)

GO TO NEW THREAD HERE

https://www.i-club.com/forums/engine-power-non-turbo-all-non-turbo-imprezas-61/projects-n-power-70988/

TO SEE THE MOST RECENT PROGRESS OF THE N/A PROJECT.

I just bought a 98 Impreza 2.2L off my buddy a few weeks ago.

His Mods:

So far he has taken apart the entire engine and replaced anything that seemed a bit worn inside and also welded up some spots that he said 2.2L’s were prone to have oil leaks.

He upgraded the exhaust to a 3" Stainless Steal Megan Racing exhaust system. (No Headers Included)

He also added a short throw shifter and a fully adjustable clutch...

I’m not too sure what quality the clutch or exhaust are other that the exhaust cost him $900.00 and has a great look/sound and the Clutch was $850.00.

All other mods were for Handling Performance, including new shocks/springs, rear sway bar, rear strut bar, etc.

I-Club and I Mods: )

I currently have $1,200.00 to spend on engine mods with more to come and want to spend it wisely as I’m not loaded or I’d buy and STI. I am looking for information from anyone who has successfully increased there HP Gain “without changing” from the eJ22 engine I currently have. I am up for either adding a Turbo, Nitrous, or just changing out all of the parts in the engine. I want this to be a 2.2L project car and I would like I-club to be a major part of it. I plan on putting as much money as I can into this car, (not from blowing it up...), and would like to know that I have an engine under the hood that can beat a stock 2004+ STI by the time I am done with it.

(Yes I know, I can just buy a bigger engine, but that’s not what I want to do with this particular car.)

I was about to buy the Exhaust Headers and a Cold Air Intake.

What do you Subu-Guru’s Suggest???

Off the subject of my project, how hard is it to do a EJ20T engine Swop? Will it fit without Cutting? Would I need a new Transmission?

I believe it'l fit fine, but wiring is supposedly very difficult and will take the longest. Aside from wiring, I think its basically just unbolt the old one, bolt in the new

Your first decision should be whether you're gonna go turbo or not. Sounds like that exhaust is big enough for turbo, but the headers and intake would point you towards N/A. If you plan to do these things yourself, I'd stick with N/A and throw down the headers/intake; that is, unless you have knowledge and experience in turbo-ing subarus. Also, your current tranny is 5-speed, I'm guessing- if it's auto, don't bother with the EJ20 swap. The swap is feasable, but would cost more than you are talking. If you want a turbo, slap one on the 2.2... but as I understand, the headers and intake you were thinking about would not work with a turbo.

I've also got a 98 impreza 2.2 (cough...automatic...cough)
Lacking a 5-sp didn't keep me from doing quite a few improvements, including: Rallitek intake, magnecor ignition cables, KYB struts & STi springs, stainless brake lines, etc... cat-back is next on the list...

Is your car a 2-door/4-door/wagon?

If you don't want to go turbo, and you wan't to buy something now... I'd reccomend the rallitek intake:

It's nice to see another 98 2.2 getting some "aftermarket" treatment... keep us updated. WORD

It's a Red 2-door...

My car also has STI Motor Mounts on it... (Forgot to mention that)

Also, Thanks for the Link to Rallitek...

Cool

Project Update...

I found a local guy who customizes and fabricates Headers, Intakes, Turbo Parts, or anything needing piping run to it...

I’m going to be working with him to design a new header for the EJ22 Engines. So NO MORE BORLA’s I’m also going to try a few different Air Intake Ideas...

After we come up with a few ideas that have different forms of “sound and power,” I’ll update you on what works best.

__________________________________________________ ______________

After that Project we will then start on Turbo Kits for the EJ22...

I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress and put together some pictures and sound bites...

When all is said and done, I’ll get you guys some prices for the Parts and Kits, cause I know there are a few of you that don’t like Borla Headers or would like to see something different than Borla Headers... Also, we could all use a cheaper-better Turbo kit designed specifically for the 2.2L’s...

Here’s a few pics of the work this guy does...

I'm VERY interested on the progress of this project. I own a '01 2.2L and is also itching for more power. I have a question though... when were the phase II engines started, 'cause aren't '98s phase I?

Keep it up!
Karl

PS... where are you located?

I was just thinking about ordering Borlas from Summit; they just started carrying them again. ($255 + shipping)

I'm not that turbo-savvy, and I've never taken the time to see exactly what is different on a turboed exhaust. But, would headers designed to work with the turbo kit also work on N/A vehicles? I'm thinking not... so do you have to decide now whether or not you are going turbo eventually?

Where abouts are you located? And what ballpark figure do you think he'll be asking for the headers?

here's my intake for your viewing pleasure: https://www.i-club.com/forums/engine-power-non-turbo-all-non-turbo-imprezas-61/rallitek-intake-custom-heat-shield-56847/

Take it easy and keep us updated on 'project 2.2'

Turbo headers will not work on N/A cars... They aim up towards the engine bay (to the turbo) while N/A headers go straight to the back of the car.

scoob - Thanks!

I was also thinking of just utilizing the EJ22 and keep it N/A with hopes of some significant gains with custom or manufactured bolt-ons. As of now the only thing I've done is install a GanzFlow CAI w/ a K&N insert. Still debating if I should get Borla headers, I've read some stories about how they crack easily.

I live in Traverse City Michigan.

I'm going to talk to him about keeping the price of the headers down around $250.00 - $300.00.

With luck I'll have my first header made by the end of next week sometime around 8/7/04 I'll know better then how much he's gonna charge for em...

I did inform him that some I-club members might be interested and I told him to keep the costs down...

I'm not sure what all will be involved with the Turbo Kit because we will be making the parts needed to convert my 2.2 N/A to a Turbo... (Project will hopefully start around 9/20/04)

Please let me know if there are any special parts that you guys might want to have specially made and I'll try to get you a price quote. (Remember, his stuff is a bit artistic so any part would be a sweet upgrade)

As for the Cold air intake and Headers, keep checking back for updates and new pics.
