Car Info: '01 Imp Wagon Silver, 17" silver OZ P7's
I have a '01 Imp wagon, the first thing I put in was a custom cold air intake, lots of intake growl. Then I got a Borla Cat back, I love the power I get form the two, but I can't drive 70 with the wagon it resonates in the back, so I go 85 and it clears up. Almost any other speed is bearable, and running hard through the gears is a delight. I got it from SPO in 2003 for $500.

greddy
bought a greddy evo 2 catback fully stainless, looks and sounds great. not loud enough to get notice by the cops, but still loud enough to turn heads when you want. Good power gain too.

I am also looking to replace the factory exhaust on my '01 2.5RS. I like the idea of having a local shop make me a custom setup. Looking for decent gains, probably with a cat-back, but don't want anything that's much louder than stock.
Can anyone shed some light on what brands of mufflers local shops carry that can accomplish this?
Is it possible to get a cat-back that isn't very loud? But also still yields power gains?
Thanks!

Your local muffler shop will likely carry a small-body (16" or less), straight-thru, universal muffler with a 2" inlet and a 4" tip for the local ricer crowd. They flow well enough, but may not be what you're looking for. IMO, a 3" or 3-1/2" tip is tasteful.
I personally can vouch for the mufflers found at bulletperformance.com. Great quality, good sound (even with a 14" body), and cheap as hell. Like $65 shipped for a muffler with offset inlet/center outlet in 5x9x16. All stainless, fiber packing, and a perforated core. Doesn't get much better than that.

22 bucks! ...the shipping is actualy more than the muffler
anyway....ebay has some of the best deals ANYWHERE for impreza parts.
search for "Impreza exhaust"or anything else you might want...
just be carefull when buying something that they say is for the impreza.....it will more than likely require some custom fab to get it to fit....but thats half the fun right?
my local custom ehaust shop www.louscustomexhaust.com has good deals, and everyone around boston goes there.
he will custom bend up to a 3'' cat back for you INSTALLED for only $125 + the muffler. Yes I know its not mandrel bent...but the angles of the bends are so mild that the ID lost is quite insignificant. I'm actualy just gona use tips and hollow out my cat untill I go turbo. it'll only cost me like 150 for a complete cat back!
Then when I go force fed I'll bother to spend the 1,000 bucks on a fully mandrel bent turbo back.

Questions:
Will having a local shop bend the center pipe themselves be as good as a mandrel bent center pipe? What would the pros/cons be of doing this?
Boxer4racing is the only place that I see where you can buy just the center pipe, but it's $150... Seems like I could get almost an entire cat-back setup from a local shop for not much more than that.
Which is more important for hp gains, the center pipe, or the muffler itself? How do brands like flowmaster and bullet compare with Stromung, Borla, etc as far as gains?
Thanks, and sorry for all the newbie questions.

Eh, crush bent, however slight, is still half-assing it in my book. For an additional $50 plus muffler, you could have a very nice cat-back. The $150 for stainless piping is a pretty good deal, and with a little fab work, you could have a Stromug equal for half the price. What's more, when you got tired of (or wanted to upgrade) your piping, you could probably sell your cat-back for about what you paid for it. People aren't going to pay for a used crush-bent exhaust, and it just seems like throwing $150+ in the trash to me.
What you pay for with Stromug IMO, et al is sound. Bullet isn't that well-known, and they don't have a bunch of sound-wave blocker crap inside them. They do have a sturdy (and free-flowing) perforated core and stainless steel construction. Mine (on the Neon) was only 14" long but was tolerable (mostly) at freeway speeds. Imagine what a longer, but straight-through muffler could do for you--much quieter but nearly equal performance. Flowmasters pretty much sound good on anything, so I doubt you could go wrong there, not to mention that they're $80 at Summit.
In the end, If you don't like your Bullet or Flowmaster or Brand X, you can always stick something else on there and only be out $80. If you don't care for the Stromug or Borla, etc...it's a bit more substantial of a loss. In the end, it's up to you. Personally, I'm going to have a custom cat-back welded up to something like a 16" Bullet.

No it will not be as good as a mandrel bent pipe. A mandrel bender is a verry expensive pipe bender that is able to bend pipes without tapering the diameter of the pipe....no matter what the angle! But if you are only bending small angles...the degree of pipe SNAG will be verry small...and the exhaust gass velocity will not suffer much more than it would with a mandrel bend pipe.

read this
http://www.cobbtuning.com/tech/exhaustdesign/index.html
in the short...with a NA car...gains from exhaust are not really all the much more with one brand than another...just different.
think about it like this...what is causing the gass the greatest restriction?though the biggest pipe possible would let the gass travel much faster...the impulse harmonics are going to keep inturupting each other on thier way out your car. and this creates back preasure. and with this you see the reason to purchase an IMPREZA specific exhaust. you need backpreasure YES...because at lower RPMs your engine isnt firing fast enough to create an effective "wave" of impulse harmonics. with back preasure, each fire helps push the previous wave out the car......and so on ...so you need JUST the right amount !....
so you can pay a ****load of money for the correctly enginered exhaust....or you can replicate
this is what I'm getting

exhaust and headers questions
howdy, i have an 02 2.5rs, and would like to get an exhaust system and intake. Im interested in getting either the Borla Cat backs, or the Stromung Cat backs.
which one is louder and deeper???
also with the Stromung, i think only the muffler is included, would that sound nice without headers or other pipes?
how much does it cost to have headers installed??
all i want is my car to sound DEEP and RUMBLY, and not honda-ish

Does magnaflow make an Impreza specific exhaust? The only place where you can enter your car make/model only offers the WRX/STi. Will this work and/or be as good as a Stromung?
I suppose what I'm getting is, if I spend the $150 on the Stromung center pipe, then get a magnaflow exhaust, isn't the center pipe just going to have to be re-bent to meet the muffler?

Rumor has it that punching out the cat(s) makes areas where the exhaust can swell up and potentially cause enough backpressure at certain RPM to hurt performance.
A friend with a '91 Legacy punched his and he said he lost power.
IMO if people want to replace the cat, do it with a straight pipe.
If you're exhaust is like mine ('95 Legacy L AWD, 16v SOHC, EJ22E with dual port exhaust) then here's stock and what you can do.
Engine -> Manifold -> O2 Sensor - > L shaped Cat -> O2 Sensor -> Straight Cat -> Muffler
The exhaust is basically four pieces, header, L shaped cat, most of the piping contains the straight cat, mid resonator, and then of course the muffler unbolts with a bit of a turned pipe.
Engine -> Header -> O2 Sensor -> Straight pipe shaped to fit -> O2 CEL fix -> Straight pipe -> No mid-resonator or a glasspack -> Turbo muffler or muffler of your choice.
Of course this is illegal on the streets, and would be hella loud with two glasspacks or just one muffler. IMO, the best (but not cheapest) thing to do is guy a header, a good cat, and a cat-back exhaust. But for those who only want to modify it for a little while, you can do this.

I got a 2002 RS and I think it just came with a different tip from the factory, but anyway, I think the exhaust at least looks fine and runs fine. But it is too quiet for my tastes. It gets on my nerves the most when I am idling, I just can't hear the engine at all. I couldn't tell weather it is on or not without looking at the tach. Also, when I am driving with the windows open or the radio on, can't hear it.
So I was wondering what would be inexpensive and make it loud enough to hear when idling and just a little louder driving? Different muffler maybe? And I would like it to just bolt on, so I could just put it on myself. Any ideas? Don't want to spend a lot is all.
