Yes, you have to remove the snorkus (intake silencer) to install a "true" CAI.
For and '02 + I would recommend either AEM (my buddy got it and loves it) or Injen, if you want the CAI, for cost.
I have a short ram j-tube with K&N filter. Anyone can make you the tube and hoses/connections. I then added my own heat sheild made from just a plastic bucket, cut to fit by me, between the MAF and the filter. It's not the prettiest thing out there but my filter is now 98% protected from any splashes or mud. After having just an open cone filter in the engine bay for 35,000 miles and adding a heat sheild, I noticed a good 5-8 HP on the butt dyno after putting on an effective heat sheild.
IMO, what I did is the best compromise between a CAI and short ram- you just don't have your intake sitting like 8" off the ground so hitting a puddle is still fun. The sound difference from a sheilded and open cone in the bay is like the difference between a CAI and short ram- you can't miss it!
