I've read about the intake silencer DIY removal thing for the WRX and even the RS from scoobymods and other sites. I went to do the mod this afternoon but I noticed the intake assembly is much more different.

The 2.2L intake assembly does not draw air from the fender like the other Subies.

I took the assembly out and noticed a lot of empty "containers" if you will (about 3 total, a large box, a smaller slimmer box, and a tube thing).

Are these what I should remove? Also if I do remove all this stuff do I have to plug up the holes?

More importantly, I've read that some years don't have silencers?

Yeah that is completely fine. As long as there is no Sensor in any of those parts its all good, just make sure to throw in a Cone Filter on the end of the pipe after you remove everything.

 

^^^ no, he doesnt need to do that, his filter is in the box on top of his throttle body

 

My 1997 Impreza L has a box that takes in air from the hole in my fender. Here's a picture of my engine bay 2 winters ago.
