exhaust upgrade??

hello,

originally i had planned on keepin' my '02 til april-june to get an '06 but i heard that the impreza is going to be all new for '07??... so might as well start some modifications since i'm going to keep the car for ~2years.

got several questions

I know the bhp is 166bhp and torque is 165 btrq

what is the whp and wtrq of the 2.5TS??...

also, i want to do exhaust modifications. I heard borla is a good company and i want to get borla headers w/ borla full catback exhaust system.

how much are the headers? full catback exhaust system

and where can i get them??...

also, how long you think it takes to get them installed

and what would be the estimated horsepower gain??....

thanks

I have Borla headers and cat back on my 99 rs. Good improvement. I'm not sure about what kind of hp gain. You can look at spomotorsports.com thats where I got mine. It took me and friend about an hour and half (no lift) to install. Make sure you get new gaskets.

- as a rule of thumb with awd you lose 25% through the drivetrain. so take your 165hp and X by .75 to get ~124 WHP.

- borla is a good company, the headers are going to make your car sound amazing with the cabtack. but borla headers arent much of a power mod, if you want power get equal length headers, if you dont care THAT much about the power but love the boxer sound get the borlas. borla catback is decent. i like the stromung myself. borla headers and stromung catback will scare small children.

- you can get the headers here. cheapest place ive ever seen selling them.

- to install them shouldnt take too long. it sounds like you are going to have these installed professionaly, its not that hard, anyone with half a brain and some wrenches can do it.

- estimated power gain: not sure, its decent though.

NOTE: you may also look into getting a high flow cat section. or if you want to be special a track pipe. the stock cats would be the bottleneck of that system.

thanks for your replies fellas.

i'm not looking for strictly sounds. i'm mostly interested in gainin' some horses and torque. the car has no high end torque or power. low end is simply amazing, but i still not enough at times.
if borla headers are not much of a power mod. which headers are??...

you rather stromung catback? vs the borla cats?... i dont want an enormously loud exhaust

thanks

I agree , renick is where i get alot of my stuff. The borla header is a nice piece.. the only complaint i have is the welds on the head flanges are inturnal and rough and its only tackwelded on the ouside so i didnt want to risk grining them down.
I have a stromung catless midpipe. it looks great quality.
when doing this you just have to remember that restriction is the key, you want 2.25 pipe.. 2.5 is way too big and just boggs things down. I had a wrx catback, 25" oval glass pack in the mid pipe with a dual glass pack muffler with no baffles in it. The car was noticibly slower with the baffles out than with them in.
So long story short all exhausts seem to be the same.. same bends same places just diffrent resinators in diffrent places ect... so the telling is goint to be the axle back section they use.
just look for a good smooth 2.25" exhaust with a decent looking muffler and a low price tag!

TWE equal lenth headers are the best you can buy. no they arent cheap. $600 or something like that. if you dont want to pay that much check out cobb EL headers. still a good increase in power. the stromung system is fairly loud. possibly too loud for your tastes. but it sounds so good that should more than make up for it. you can always put in a resonator to quiet it down too.

cudaeh: 2.5" catback really isnt as bad as you make it sound. after 2.5 is where you really lose the low end.

soccerchild or whatever: if you want a lot of top end power get the 2.5" catback. if you want to retain more of your low end and sacrifice the top go for 2.25". its your call.

humm... no one ever mentioned that the 2.5 would give you lots of top end. Every one always told me that the 2.25 was the best overall. when i had the baffles out of my muffler i didnt notice any upper end power... you would think that a no restrucition muffler would be about the same flow as a 2.5 exhaust with a more restrictive muffler... hum... guess my next project is to find an sti exhaust and bolt it on and see how it goes..

i''ve got borlas (from rennick...good shop) high flow cat and cobb tunning cat back. i can honestly say it is the most badass sound i've heard from a car. little loud but i love it. okay really loud but it kicks ***. i thought the evo was a good combo of loudness and sound you can barely hear it inside, no droning too quiet for me.
