I have a 99 2.2 liter impreza l wagon and it seems to be buring oil, it doesnt smoke but if you check the oil after about 2000 miles its down on oil and its really black. It has almost 110,000miles on it. When changing the plugs on it i noticed there was oil where the spark plug was,(in the hollow part, the shell between the out side of the motor) is it supposed to be there? How long is the clutch good for?
Does anyone know the average price of a topend rebuild?

I have a leak somewhere in my wag. as well. I have the same vehicle as you with 5spd tranny. The leak started in about 65k miles. Right now I have 72600ish miles.

They say to check the oil pump seal or something to that.

I have to find where the oil pump is because I've never looked for it. I have to check my mom's MY93 Legacy as well because it's losing oil as fast as it burns up fuel.

I've got about 130k on mine, and didn't have any problems with it till I took it to sears point for an HPDE thing, and after each session oil was dripping on the exhaust causing smoke to rise up through the hood scoop, looked kinda funny but smelled bad, and I got kinda worried. However, it was overfilled with oil, and after doing an oil change and putting in the right amount, the smoking dissapeared tho after coming off the freeway to a light it has a slight oil-burning smell. But I'm not sure if its still leaking, cuz if it is its really little.

Anyway, when I was worried about it, a few people gave some suggestions, such as head gaskets, crank gasket, and something else which I forget. How fast are you losing oil? I'd have it checked by a mechanic if I were you.

As far as the clutch, I believe it to have been the original, but I don't know, I had to replace it as soon as I got the car at about 125k miles. Are you asking just to know, or do you think yours is going?

The clutch grabs once in awhile, and just was kinda wondering how long they last. lol When i changed the oil i just through in a gallon, takes 4.2 quarts. Dad checked it at 2000-2500 was down about a half quart, no big deal only went down alittle. So he toped it off. Then when he dropped the oil it didnt even fill up a gallon container.
