Burning a lot of oil

My car did this, too. I've known a few subies that have had this problem. Luckily my car was still under warranty.
The nice thing is, you can drive with it like that, just keep checking the oil and adding more oil every month. Not fun but well cheaper than buying a new short block (which is what you'd probably need to fix it).

Any idea why this is going on? How many miles does the 1.8L engine have left on it?

My advice: Buy a EJ20T, do a conversion. A ton of work, but well worth it.

.... long-term solution quickly
Quickly? Are you saying it doesn't have much life in it?
There is a number of long-term solutions. One of them is to install another 1.8L engine in it.
It drives pretty good, no noticeable effects. Just keep adding oil every other day.
P.S. It has a new transmission and good body without rust.
