Burning a lot of oil

Definately keep a lookout, but I know Subarus that have gone over a year (ie, still going to this day) that go through a quart of oil over 500 miles. Just gotta remember to keep adding oil
Not to say I would keep the engine, but I just want to say I wouldn't necessarily be counting down the final days.

everyone calm down.
He said it is not smoking alot so he is just leaking oil
It will last as long as he keeps oil in it
I've never had a ej18 myself but I've had plenty of leaky ea82's and ea27's

I don't think it will be working very long either. If you can source a 1.8L, get one!
There are lots of used 1.8L engines on the market, like on that car-part.com site.
It seems a cost-efficient repair, as opposed to getting something else.
The car fits the requirements. Not much power, but 30 mpg.
Yes, I keep adding oil. Not sure where it is going. The other day I changed oil and noticed a lot of black oily stuff on the surface down there. Don't see any on the driveway, however. Strange.

What are my engine options? Can I install something more powerful which is an easy swap?
(I wouldn't be disappointed with 1.8L however)
Yeah, however not a whole lot more than dropping in a new EJ22 or EJ25
new EJ18s aren't even around i think...

im swaping my engine out when i can get the money, its a 1.8 if you want it? but it has 150k mile on it
it could be the rear main seal or leaking around the exhaust manifold someplace and burning but that is a major oil leak it sould be fixed but it should not hurt anything if you keep a good eye on the oil level

My advice: Buy a EJ20T, do a conversion. A ton of work, but well worth it.

P.S. It has a new transmission and good body without rust.
I've never had a vehicle rust out because I put a new engine into it.

How long will Soob engines last? What is high mileage for the flat-four?
Looking at getting a '96 Legacy Outback w/ the 2.2. Car has 184k on it. Just wondering how long these motors will last? I am familiar with German cars, and know that 200k is not a problem for them, but what about the Soobs? The current owner said that oil is leaking onto the clutch and "messing stuff up". I am assuming then it needs a new Rear Main Seal, however I am almost positive he said TRANSMISSION Fluid was leaking onto the clutch. How is this possible? What could be the problem?
Obviously this is a high mileage car, but because of the year certainly highway miles. Should I be concerned? I am new to Subarus and need advice. I have heard that these motors are not too hard to work on (almost as easy as a VW flat-four) What do I need to know before purchasing?
Thank you very much for your time.

Before you swap in an EJ18 have a look at the cam and crak seals, also I just priced out an EJ22 at $950 including ECU (used RCR Subaru in Sacramento) while your subaru is still running buy a used motor and build it up, or have it done for you. Maybe by the time your engine craps out your built up 2.2 (or 1.8) will be ready to drop in.
