i was wondering if there are any good turbos that will at least give me 300whp or more for a cheap price. I was wondering if i got a vf22 on my sti that it would maybe get me at least 300whp or more. I wanted a cheap turbo upgrade that would be good for dragging and track driving. Not really intrested in FP greens or anything like that, it would be nice but i dont really want to spend that much.

A well tuned vf22 on an STI with 91oct should get you to 300whp, at least on a dynojet, though once you figure in the cost of injectors+pump/engine managment/tuning/ and possibly installation(unless you plan to DIY) its really kind of counter intuitive to try to save a few hundred on the turbo, that should be the one thing you want to spend the most on. Many of us build the rest of our setup around the turbo that we want to run, just like many hardcore stereo guys build their system around the speakers they want to run, otherwise your sort of spending the money to build a home theater to run radio shack speakers
And that doesnt mean just going with a huge turbo, I have no problem at all with the idea of staying with a nice small turbo but there are MANY better choices for VF22 size turbos out there, an 18G flows more air and by all accounts spools much quicker than a 22, and can be found everywhere for way south of $1G
Hope this helps a bit

I'd say go with the VF22 first. Just buy your injectors a bit big, like PE 650s or maybe even 800s, and if you decide the VF22 isn't enough, it's the only component you have to change. And hey, you can't beat it for $600 brand spankin' new.

Apparently, i dont really want to spend a grand on a turbo right now, just looking for something that would help me achieve something close to 300whp. I did some research on some vf22s on STIs and they said they got some good results on them. I might try a vf22 and if im not satisfied, i'll probably go bigger. I hope i feel a difference.

If I had to choose a turbo...I would probably go with a TDO5 18g.

IMO dont waste your time with the vf22, it's a tiny turbo. You say you want a drag/track car. I'd look into the TD06 20g variants. It's not the largest turbo but it will give good spool and great top end. They can be had for a little over 1K, might also consider selling your vf39 to a forester xt owner or wrx owner and that will balance out the cost. Like others said you will need engine management, injectors (pe850 sidefeed are for sti, not 800), and fuel pump.

Yea, VF22 is a little too small for a 2.5 engine. The stock turbo is VF39, and I think it's also adequate enough to get you close to 300 whp with the right supportive parts. Or, I would go for what DAN AVON7 said.

Bear in mind that everybody's quoting horsepower readings from different dynos. I've seen several stock turbo STis post 270whp, and up to 310wtq, and that's on Subaru Specialists' low-reading Mustang dyno. I imagine 300whp on a Dynojet is probably equivalent, and the VF22 will give a little more top end than a VF39.
