rattaling sound coming from front of car

I have an 06 wrx and i get a rattaling sound from what sounds like the front of my car when i get my car up to exactly 4250 RPMS in each gear. It doesnt happen everytime, sometimes it will do it in each gear and sometimes it wont do it at all. It used to do it periodically when the a/c was just on but now it does it with or without the a/c on. Any ideas what this could be?

Check the heat shield on your up pipe maybe the welds broke off.

Well it's hard to diagnose a car without actually hearing it in person but here are just some basic things to look for when the engine is cold as food for thought.... check pitch mount or dog bone on back of tmic, heat shield on the turbo (check for broken bolts and etc. causing things to rattle or metal to metal contact), down pipe, intake (if stock make sure everything is bolted on and if aftermarket cai then check around fender hole areas and etc.) Check your bumper, your hood scoop, suspension, and etc. The list can go on and on. The basic idea is to try to replicate that rattling noise by gently pushing/pulling/hammer hand action on things around the engine bay and see if you can source out the problem. Then you can rule things out and go elsewhere. Good luck!

Regards,

Ron

it sounds like clinkingish or rattling and it does it at the same exact rpms everytime or not at all. its weird. does yours do it at same rpms? did you find out what was wrong with it?

^ It could also be detonation, you will have to log your car to verify this.

Mine does that too... but around 2200-2500 rpm and mostly when cold. I had the shop search around last time it was in there and they said it was the heatshield on the down pipe. If i wasn't about to get a new DP, i'd be hunting/solving the problem right now.

...but it can wait.

It was indeed the heatshield on the down pipe. Bent it back a bit and it's gone...
... although, i only noticed it when spending time inside the engine bay during the radiator swap... and now she has a blown hg omg fml.

ya, rattles suck.

It sounds like a heatshield rattle like everyone described, but it could also be a blown out downpipe gasket. I blew mine out once and it sounded just like a turbo going bad.

I seem to have this sound going on now. It stops when I put the clutch in and returns at any engine speed over 2500rpms. It's like a ticking sound. Wheel speed makes no difference, just engine speed. I figured it had to be something next to, in, or around the turbo. It sounds like it's coming from right in front of the glove box. This Weds I will dig around and try to isolate it, but after reading this thread I'll check the heat shield first. Thanks peeps.

I had a rattling coming from the back of my car at certain RPMs.. and I couldnt figure out what it was for the longest time and then finally I found out that one of the clips from my rear mudflaps was hitting the exhaust hanger everytime I got to certain RPM because of the exhaust shaking. Try to have someone replicate the vibration while you listen from the outside.
