I installed my downpipe a few weeks ago and was wondering about the heat shield. I know that heat is one of the enemies of performance. Will leaving the heat shield off really hurt any performance of the car by lowering temperatures? So baiscally my question is......is a heat shield worth the money?

The bigest reason there is a heatsheild there is because the cat gets really hot trying to block all of that goood exhaust. If you have no cat you have a lot less heat. If you have the cat you might want to put the heat sheild back on. The dp is still pretty hot but i have noticed that mine cools very quickly.
I bought a heat shield from www.speedmonkey.com to replace the stock one since i installed a turboback. Not sure how much better it is than the stocker, but it helps. I don't think that the performance difference due to the heat can be felt by the butt dyno.
the heat shield is for the TURBO more than the dp.
hack the stocker and put it back on, or buy an aftermarket one.
either way, you really should put one back on. there's only about a foot between turbo and IC.
like the McDLT: "keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool."

I opted to leave the heatshield off when I installed my exhaust because of the rattling noise the heatshield makes when you hack it up and reinstall it using only the bracket mounted to the downpipe bolts. Instead, I wrapped the entire downpipe and bought a heatshield that was made for the intercooler, and mounts to it using the existing IC mounts. Removing the heatshield also allows more of that ram air coming through the scoop to pass over the entire turbo and not be bottlenecked by the inlet mouth of the heatshield.

Initially, I didnt wrap the downpipe. I only did it because I realized how much heat was coming off of it when I had a burning plastic/rubbery smell coming from that area of the engine bay after I took off the stock DP and heatshields. Wouldnt have been so bad if the climate-control intakes werent right behind the hood, bringing that nasty smell into the car. Yuk.
