current and future mods for MY05 WRX (was: What to do...)
I have an 05 wrx with...
aem cai
hks carbon high power exhaust
hks downpipe
now my question is my friend has a gt spec gen. 2 exhaust manifold with up-pipe.
He said he will sell it to me for 300. good deal or no?

Get rid of the CAI...do a search unto why.
Do a search on that package...the UP will give you like 15 hp or something and the manifold will give you like 5 hp. Sounds ok but I'd use $300 on a Helix UP and DP combo. Sell that HKS too...it's not super good.
So here:
Sell:
CAI
HKS DP
+$250 to your wallet
Buy:
Helix UP/DP combo from Gruppe S
$450 out of your wallet
End up only spending $200 more than what you already spent and you will get better performance. Yay!

The HKS exhaust for the WRX sucks. There is a great thread on here with comparison pictures. It's actually the downpipe that really bites.
“Whatever pipe you go with make shure that it either has a wastegate pipe or is a big mouth to suck more exhaust out of the turbo. The stock one and HKS have a flat pice of steel there and make the exhaust get pushed over the "barrier" to the pipe.”
“HKS makes absolutely awful Subaru exhausts. Worse than stock except for being catless.”
I couldn’t find the thread with the pictures, but here are some quotes from other threads on HKS subaru exhaust.

There's 2 elements to the HKS exhaust. The DP, which is a crap piece; it has the same restriction as the stock DP, and it necks back down to 2.5 at the end.
The catback is a nice piece, except for necking down to 2.5 to fit with stock, but that can be taken care of by any competent exhaust shop. It sounds nice, and flows fine, and the hangers ont he can are nice. It's a little ricy, but I've got an N1, so I have no room to talk
Those reviews are for the catback, not the DP.

Engine management (there's a specific forum for this topic) choices are a subjective thing for turbo Impreza owners. Currently, the most popular, in no particular order, are probably the TurboXS' UTEC, the Cobb AccessPort, and the EcuTek reflash. There are other alternatives that are a little bit more specialized such as standalone systems for highly modified or race-ready WRXs and STis but this doesn't apply to 99% of the owners who post on this board (there are a few, though). A little time spent using the Engine Management forum's Search feature will probably yield a whole slew of comments made over the past year or so on the various engine management choices.
