Boosting problem
Boosting problem
Hi everyone. i have a problem with my wrx. i bought it used and it has problems with the boost. i have the 3 gauge cluster where the clock belongs so the boost gauge reads Mpa's instead of PSi. i have major turbo lag and in second or third gear, i can hit .7 Mpa but it drops right away. isnt the stock wrx suppose to have a peak boost of 14.5 or somthing (about .1 mpa)? my mechanic told me that maybe the previous owner had a boost controller and took it out so it might be messed up. what do you guys think could be wrong? i only have a hks up pipe down pipe and cat back. thanks.

did u try
did you try resetting the ecu? disconnect the negative and wait and then step on the brake. i dont got the gauges i n mine, so i am not sure of the numbers but does it seem to take longer for the turbo to spool up? when you bought it was it acting up right away or was it ok and then you noticed a difference?
umm.... i tried reseting it but it didnt work. there is still major turbo lag. ive been trying to drive it to see if the ecu resets itself but still nothing. thanks for the help so far. more ideas would be appreciated. oh yeah, i bought it with this problem too. the car was pretty cheap.

Well... lets assume for the second you're reading the gauge wrong. First off, you mean 0.07 MPa, not 0.7 right
And lets assume for the second that your actually boosting closer to 0.5MPa. This could be an indicator that you're running on the wastegate only. Perhaps the previous owner took his boost controller out and did not put the boost lines back properly.
IIRC, there should be a line that goes from the compressor to the wastegate actuator. In the middle of that like is a T which leads off to the factory boost controller. Also make sure that and other lines are secure, not cracked, etc.

Stock boost, by Subaru's words, is 14.2psi. This is from at least 3rd gear on, if not in 2nd as well. Max boost in1st gear is appearantly ~7psi

I would also check that the boost lines are configured properly, and if they are, that the inline restrictor is not melted shut. That will give you wastegate boost ~ 7psi

Like everyone else above has said I would check that the vacuum lines are connected correctly as it does sound like you are running off the wastegate.
