Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

My reasoning is, the heat has to go somewhere. If it does not radiate out of the pipe, then that eliminates that option. Where does the heat go? If it's coated on the inside, then the pipe metal must not take much heat relatively, so then that eliminates that option. Where else is there for the heat to go? The cat is gone so there is no more static heat sitting around there. So we know that that makes the exhaust velocity increase since there is less restriction, well maybe not increase as much as it allows the exhaust to reach a fast velocity quicker. But at full boost and high rpms, the exhaust can only go so fast out of the pipe so there's where my concers are. Does the heat flow away better with the exhaust since heat does make for more velocity?

Can we get the makers of the pipe (crucial) to help us answer some of these questions?
The heat will go through the turbine, exhaust and eventually go out the tailpipe. Here is a link to Crucial that will give you some info on the upipe http://www.crucialracing.com/products/uppipe.php.

Here is a link that explains how coating a header (or any pipe for that matter) inside and out will help increase the life of the pipe, decrease engine bay temps and help performance http://www.jet-hot.com/pages/techinfo.html. I think Crucial uses a different coating but this will give you a good idea of what coating a pipe will do.

If I had to guess what upipe was the best I've seen I would have to give it to Crucial but thats just my opinion. With that being said I'm not going to go out and buy one to replace my STI upipe since I doubt it would give me much of an increase in performance.

My vote's still for this one, but compared to the Crucial pipe it seems almost over-engineered; I'd be skeptical about it (so many gaskets = opportunities for leaks) if I hadn't driven the 560hp all-APS STi at Dyno-Comp :-)

Crucial is a pretty small company. To prove my statement about spool-up being faster with the Crucial Racing uppipe, we'd need to buy a bunch of different uppipes, and dyno each one on the same car. It would take days and cost thousands of dollars. Even then, you can put the same car on the dyno, without modification, three different times and get three different results.

The best information I can provide is anecdotal. A number of our customers have replaced competitors' uppipes with ours and have reported acheiving higher boost at lower RPMs. Customers who replace the stock pipe are astounded, but I believe anyone replacing the stock uppipe with a good aftermarket pipe would feel the same way. Another factor involved in buying and installing aftermarket parts is the need to rationalize the expenditure in relationship to acheiving a good result. In other words, some guys buy something and even if it's a piece of crap, they convice themselves the money was well spent. I'm sure some of our customers are guilty of this type of thinking when they install our uppipe even though the pipe is not a piece of crap.

But the fact remains, we are a company committed to producing a high quality part, capable of meeting whatever performance claims we make for it. We use the highest quality materials, the best quality fabrication, and back it all up with a lifetime guarantee. In regard to the uppipe, even to the casual observer, the design concept is very well thought out and it should perform at a very high level. We've never have had a return and we have sold hundreds.

Consider, the inside of the pipe is aluminum oxide blasted before it's coated and is so smooth as to be almost slick. The EGT probe is eliminated and there are no flow disrupting flex joints. I really don't feel uncomfortable making claims of quicker spool-up taking those considerations and the feed-back from customers into account. I just wish we had the ability to actually prove it.

Has anyone tried the recently released COBB pipe? According to them, it's supposed to be super-duper. It isn't coated so that might be a downside...

Yesterday I got my COBB up-pipe and it looks great. Very well made and I think it will work great. I will post more when I get it installed. I am planning on installing it Next week some time. I have to wait on my Crucail Racing Gaskets to come in.

I have a PDE flex and I'm real happy with it. Just make sure whoever puts it on tightens the EGT sensor if you decide to use it. MPJ installed mine(I'm far too lazy these days) and about a week later I had just finished putting 5 gallons of 100 octane in, I jumped on the highway and hear this HORRID noise. I couldn't figure out WTF it was. It got MUCH worse even with the slightest boost. I pulled over and popped the hood. To my dismay the EGT probe was just hanging there. I have a real nice burn on the back of my hand from bumping into the turbo housing when I tried to resintall it. I won't be going back to MPJ, but just a heads up.

Aside from the jackass not tightening my EGT sensor(all of my other stuff has been installed by gruppe), the PDE UP has been great. She's on boost much sooner, and I'm not terrified of wrapping it out in 4th and having a chunk of cat fly through my turbo.

Gutted stock up-pipe=free.Honestly after you do it its actually pretty smooth inside.I'm sure the other up pipes at most are spooling maybe 200 rpm quicker but i'm not paying $200 for that.

I always like to keep every single stock part for my cars in case I ever want to sell it, also my time isn't free so gutting the stock pipe wasn't that efficient for me, much easier to buy one that I know works and don't have to worry about getting every last bit of catalyst out.
