ahhhh, where to mount the EGT probe?
i'm pretty sure i want to mount it on #3's pipe. somebody please speak up if i'm all wrong here. problem is, i don't know which one that is... could someone who knows let me knows? i got the greddy peak/warning gauges and they all came with probes, cool. now i gotta get the shop to give me my money back for the extra set of probes they sold me... dorks, shows you how much to trust some guy behind the counter, eh? the pobe came in a little compression housing that has threads on the outside; should i take the manifold down to a muffler shop and have them weld on a bung with matching threads? maybe that was a dumb or rhetorical question, but i've never done this before. thanks for the help fellas, Bennie
and don't buy your STi at Carr subaru in oregon, they were proud to tell me they have five sitting in the back, all @ $7995 over msrp. they even have a regular rex with prodrive wheels, and an STi scoop and spoiler sitting there with $32,600 written on the window... what are these guys smoking??? yah, the STi is nice, and its a limited production car; but these guys had a smile on their face as they started to give bend me... well, you get the idea. later

cylinder #3 about 3in from the head. Thats where I mounted mine. I think Scoobymods.com has some pics of the install. You could also just drill a whole and then thread it so that the sensor just screws into it. I used the welded on bung though since I didn't want metal shavings going into the header (I've got a Borla header).

thanks, but i got a question? you say you have a welded bung, didn't you have to drill the hole first anyways, and wouldn't the drilling cause metal shavings to go inside the header? i was just planning on removing the header for the probe install. is there a way to do it where i dont have to remove it, but still be sure that no metal shavings end up in the header?
i'll look on scoobiemods again, i couldn't find much last time. 3" from the head is about what i was planning on, but which pipe is #3? driver's side? front? rear? that's what i meant by which cylinder. thanks again fella, take it easy. Bennie

Definately remove it if you want to do it. I didn't have a turbo to worry about at the time so a small amount of shavings didn't bother me. I just didn't want to then try and thread the opening that close to the head and end up with even more shavings in it. Considering that the metal shavings would then be blown through your turbo it would be a good idea to remove the manifold first. As long as you have it off you could send it out for heat coating as well.

okay, now i get it. i assumed we were both talkin turbos; anyways, while its out i'm gonna put in a Perrin uppipe. has anyone had trouble with a solid (no flexy fitting) uppipe on the EJ20? i've heard and read goog things about the Perrin; and they are local here, so whenever i'm considering parts, i just go talk to them; they've been spot-on every time so far. thanks for the help, Bennie

Here is a little trick.
If you have an uppipe with an additional o2 bung, you can get an OEM oil pressure sensor adapter bung and use it to mount your EGT. Into the the additional o2 bung.

The flexpipe uppipes wont last quite as long as the nonflex ones will. The flexpipe will help to minimize the chances of an exhaust leak. If you live in a climate that changes a lot (NewEngland) then the flex pipe is a good idea since constant heating and cooling of the pipe will make it expand and contract some. Other than that its pretty much just personal choice.
