2.2 turbo

Can I turbo my EJ22? How hard would it be? what parts would I need? how much would it cost? What would be a good initial boost setting? How much boost can the EJ22's internals stand up to? How about fuel and ignition, what would be a good ECU for this? I desperately need to keep up with my buddies Mustang and 300ZX!

I am sure you can turbo your EJ22 but I am sure you can turbo about anything as well. I think this has been talked about before I would do a search. And you might wanna look at the cost effectiveness of this as in how long will the engine take it and how much Time and Effort and Money you will have to spend to get it running properly.
I am not a tuning genious I learn most of my knowledge from the old heads of this site and Hyper Rev Tuning Articles. I would assume you would probably need atleast:
ECU
Turbo
Intercooler
BOV
Boost Solenoid
a new MAF (maybe not sure)
Maybe different pistons and rod but thats just a guess.
Anyway good luck with whatever you decide to do man.

Although it would be quite rewarding to turbo your N/A motor. All the time and money you put into it could be better spent on just doing an engine swap. You'll be up and running much quicker then a home brew turbo setup.

Didn't Subaru make 400 turbo 2.2s sold as the 22B? Why couldn't I turbo my 2.2 with parts from a WRX and a stand alone computer for fuel and ignition. Arn't the mounting points for the exhaust the same on the EJ20 and the EJ22? I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work. The hardest part would be the fuel and ignition tuning. I just thought I'd see what you guys thought of the idea. I'd like to do this 'cause I need more power!
Well getting 22b parts is near impossible. Like you said only a few hundred were made.
What you should do is get an already turbo'd legacy engine. I know of one guy personally that had done this and even used some parts from a EJ20 engine like a PDE down pipe and uppipe. So I am pretty sure that the exhaust pieces will work. Although he had a problem getting a VF30 in there as the angle of the housings were off for his FMIC setup.
Finding a junked tubo'd legacy shouldnt be too hard since well it's old. Then you just have to see if the engine is still in good condition or needs a rebuild/overhaul.

There is a guy on ebay selling subaru front clips. Buy one of these, rebuild the motor and do an engine swap.
If you want to turbo your's you'll probably need a lot of custom parts. You'll definately need a up-pipe, downpipe, turbo, intercooler and piping, blow off valve, and some type of computer. You'll probably need to add some fuel as well as I would guess your stock injectors aren't up to the task. Without doing any internal modification to your engine you won't be able to run a lot of boost (I would guess around 7 PSI) without damaging the internals. I guarantee the 22B block had a lot of internal strengthing done (rods/pistons/crank/probably different heads, valve springs, etc) just like the new STI motor - it is not the same internally as the 2.5RS motor. This project would be expensive, but it would be fast and unique.

I wasn't expecting to find 22b parts, but I knew that Subaru turboed an EJ22. Since Subes are like legos, I thought turbo exhaust parts from a WRX would fit on my engine. I was in the junkyard the other day, but the only turbo motors they had were in old Loyales, These were carburated and used a different turbo setup, as well as a turbo size sutable for one of those annying motorized scooters! I know I need an ECU for this but what would be a good one? My whole idea was to make a sort of 22b replica. Or just to use the 2.2 motor for a good fast spool and lots of power. I also had plans for a front mount intercooler using an all aluminum radiator that's half the stock height and placing the i/c in the grill location. I know this would take a lot of custom work and money, but the results would be worth it. Short i/c piping for less pressure drop, and cool rally looks. The radiator would be doubled in thickness and all aluminum for good cooling.
