Melt, burn, singe all come to mind at once.

If you are running just more boost (like with an MBC) then you are just increasing the boost going into the engine, not the air and fuel. Which creates really bad conditions for your engine and in the end may cost you a new engine and turbo if done for an extended amout of time.

On a completely stock WRX, I wouldn't run anything more than 14.5psi. With a TBE and stock ECU, you can run up to 16.5psi depending on the gas you get in your area. With 100+ octane, you can get away with running as much as 17-18psi if you're careful.

One major thing to note is that almost all forms of aftermarket boost control will induce a condition known as part throttle full boost. This means that you're at part throttle (bellow 70% throttle), yet your boost control system is allowing you to make a lot more boost than the stock ECU would at low throttle positions. In the case of the 02-03 WRX ECU, this will cause a lean condition and could lead to serious damage. So partial throttle operation is what you need to worry about most when using any aftermarket boost control with the stock ECU. If you have an 04-05, forget about using any sort of aftermarket boost control untill you get a reflash.

You're still going to run into heat issues, yes? LIke one's that make cat and egt probe piece run through the turbine?

Jason,

you don't run into any heat issues at WOT when running higher boost on the stock ECU. The ECU keeps on adding fuel and keeps the a/f ratio nice and rich. Unless of course you run out of injectors... but that's also why I said that you should run 17+psi only with 100+ octane gas... so if you do run out of injectors, the fuel can handle the slightly leaner a/f ratios.

I've personally run 16.5 - 17psi on the stock ecu with a can of torco added to a full tank of our lovely cali 91 and had no EGT issues and the ECU happily pushed the IAM to 16 and knock correction up to 8-12 throughout the RPM range. For comparisson, running 15psi on straight 91, the IAM works its way to 15 and knock correction is around 4-7... just goes to show how crappy our gas is!
