I can relate to that. My parents bought me my first car out of necessity, granted it was nothing fancy. It was a really beat up (which was why it was cheap) 98 Escort that used to be in the rental fleet at my local Ford dealership for my “high school graduation” present. I was going to be living at home while I attended college the next year and I need a vehicle to get me to class, not to mention for my part-time job since both my parents worked. My parent’s couldn’t help me beyond that so I had to take extra care of the car. I practically worshiped the car with what little money I had at the time and it got me thru college without any major problems.

It was eventually totaled 2 months after I graduated college. Some 16-year-old kid in his brand spanking new Ford F150 barreling thru a parking lot at 35 MPH, ran a stop sign and T-Boned me. I swear the first words out of his mouth were “Dad is going to kill me when he finds out what happened to my truck!”

I really don’t think this thread is necessarily about parents buying them cars; it’s about the “gimme” attitude of some people. People who have worked hard to either earn or maintain what they’ve got tend to appreciate what they have more. In my experience people who have things handed to them don’t appreciate what they have and they just want more. One kid I grew up with in high school wrecked one car after another and it didn’t matter to him. Mommy and Daddy would just buy him a new one.

Someone above posted that cars are the new toys of today. I would never call a car or any form of automobile a toy. When I was younger I got boxes of LEGOS, Hot Wheel cars, or a video game. Not a $20,000+ car! A toy is not something you can hop in and because you are stupid or reckless get you and/or someone else killed.

I've read through the majority of the posts on this thread, and i noticed a real black and white attitude. True no kid should be able to afford a $30k car... thats rediculus. I'm 18 and I'm going to be getting a year or 2 old WRX. I wanted a STI (who doesn't) but my Dad thought it was too fast (I'd accidently wrap it around a tree, accidently because I am responsible) So back to the Black and White, pay/gift. I'm paying for alot of the car, but my dad is going to help me out with some sort of a downpayment to help get the monthly payments down. He has the attitude that no kid should be given a brand new expensive car. My first car a 95 grand Prix GTP was given to me, but I gave him $1000 to convince him to buy it. So I think the answer is somewhere inbetween. It's not a sin for you to be helped out buying a car, but probably not good for the character of a teenager to be given a BMW sports car like some of the kids that went to my high school.

But hell.. if someone gave me $40k for a car... I'd be stupid to not take it.

 

all i gotta say about the matter is he is not bein ungreatful... i mean if we were in his situation we would be dissapointed too if we didnt get an STi...

i had $5000 saved up to buy a new car but my father was givin a car (not much, a 91 Dodge Spirit) and being that he was plannin to buy a new car he gave me his car... his car was a 93 Impreza L Sedan. i mean it's the basic 1.8 engine model but i love my car. it may not be as fast as all the other imprezas but i am fixin it up to make it look nice... i dont plan on buyin a new car till i'm 25 so my Impreza gone be with me for a while =)

Hey dude, now you have some incentive to do well in school, get a degree from a good college, and get a job that allows you to buy any car your heart desires. Instead of looking at it like you're letting go of the prom queen that you never had, take a positive attitude and motivate yourself to do well in the future. It's always sweeter when you make it on your own.
