Right now I'm guessing it'll be right around 3 grand, but I'm going to rebuild my other transmission and sell it so that will give me some cash back.

Ive never heard the leggy rear diff thing.. thats interesting.
How does it compare to the r180?

I think your also going to need knuckles, hubs, brake brackets, new rear axles to fit into the bigger diff, your lug patter also i think will change (not sure what jdm pattern is) so you will need new wheels.

Also, are you going to need any kind of new wiring harness/plugs? I doubt your usdm wrx harness is ug and play with an sti tranny.

I highly sugest you talk to a professional about this and get a set in stone checklist from someone who does this on the regular.. thats just me tho

I'm placing a call to Paul at FW motor sports before I act on anything.
The 05 Usdm 6 speed is actually perfect for my 06. The r180 is converted to the 3.90 so all I need is the driveshaft, the trans, clutch and flywheel, and converted r180 my axels will work.

Nice, sounds like its going to be an awesome project! One that i would love to attempt on my wrx one day as well.

Keep the thread updated with your progress, and try to take lots of install/progress pictures!

Will do!
I like the 6 speed better because the 5 speed is faster in a straight line but while cornering your Rpms drop lower than the 6, and the closer ratios are just nicer to me.
Plus it's strong as hell.

If you want to skip the R180, you could get a 6MT from a 06 or newer that has the 3.54 ratio, then get a R160 from a 02-05 wrx. If you are going to go with the 04-05 6MT, sourcing a R160 in the 3.9 ratio will be more challenging. I think the absolute cheapest route would be 06 6MT, 02-05 wrx R160, auto propeller shaft, clutch. All your wrx axles would work going this route. I would eventually look into a DCCDpro to keep all the power from going to the rear on the R160.

A Dccd without a controller keeps it 40/60 doesn't it?
Also, if I go the r180 route I need axels and hubs right?
Or could I keep my hubs and just get axels

You really need to read this thread completely. It will tell you exactly what is compatible for all parts for each year. I knew nothing about this swap in 2009 and was able to swap my 06 TR to a 6MT myself based just off this thread. As far as the DCCD, it defaults to 65% rear, 35% front on 06 and older 6MT's, I believe they changed it in 07.

I think this is too costly for me.

I will look for an 06 6 speed.
What was the shaft you were talking about and where can I find one how much are they?

Any reviews of ra gears? I hear they make your car slower in dding and all driving except on a track, also poor mpg but not a concern for me.
It's between ra and an 09 plus wrx trans now.
I've heard that ra can hold 400 hp...
But I've heard they fail at about 290 from other forums. How does the 09 plus gears compare to the Ra in strength and speed.
Driving is mountain roads track raly cross and dd. 06 wrx with vf39 all supporting mods exhaust inlet Cobb ap tuned with Clark turner. Putting down about 330 torque.

What happened to the sti swap?

Too much money, too much work, or too much homework?
