Power Steering problems

My power steering is all jacked up. When just sitting at idol, I get no power assist (except when the motor is cold). When I bring the RPM's up I seem to get some assist then when the car is just coasting I get little to no assist. Anybody got any ideas? It seems that the pump is whinning a little as well?????????? Thanks for the help.

Not to state the obvious but is your fluid low?

Unhappy Not at all.

I just got back from subaru and they told me that the pump is bad. They have never seen this before but the impeller that pushes the fluid isn't spining at the right revs hence not suppling the rack with enough line pressure. Just my luck I guess. The fun thing is the $400 dollars to get the new pump. Yeah for me!!!!!

Bad pump?

Yep u definitely have a blown power steering pump. You should get it fixed before it gets really bad. I had the same problem before and I didn't get it fixed right away and as a result tiny metal pieces got into the whole power steering pump system.
