Changing gears.. "it doesn't feel the same"

This is going to be very hard to explain... but, on my 03' rex, it seems like changing gears is different from when I first got it... Mainly from 2nd to 3rd... I have the factory short throw on it, and going from 2nd to 3rd it feels different everytime.. sometimes it goes right in, other times it feels like something is rubbing, almost if you took metal and sand and started to mix, you get that "feeling of it not being smoothe". Now when I go into 5th gear there is a short almost whistle like sound from it going into 4th to 5th... no grinding but a "weeeeeeeeee" noise... I've never heard this before in all the times changing from 4th to 5th.. this is what worries me.

I come home today, check the Manual trasmission oil level and it is on the "L" low level I guess.... My question is should I just take this into the dealership? The car has 11,300 miles on it, It has yet to be taken to a dealership for anything, I have done all of the oil changes, and rotated the tires.. So far all that has been good. Do I have to take my car to where I bought it for them to check this out!? Will they know what I am talking about? I just feel weird taking my car someplace because of all the horror stories about them raking you over the coals for costs, or joyriding in the car...etc.. There is one dealership that is trusted and I hear nothing but good things from their sevices dept, but I didn't buy my car at their dealership...

Any advice?

Thanks :-)

-Nigel

Take it to the dealer. It should be under warranty. The whine you're talking about sounds like gear whine, which is normal (to a certain extent) and increases with less sound insulation and different gear lube. It could also be caused by low fluid, I assume.

I have a 03 wrx as well and I notice my 2nd to 3rd gear change feels different as well. Before it was smooth but now there's a little bit of notchiness...I don't know how else to say it. I haven't checked my tranny oil yet so who knows. I have about 7-8k miles (don't really pay attention)

Yep, that's it exactly, notchiness! Just doesn't feel right...

Also can I take my car to the one dealership that is trusted around here even though I did not buy the car from them, or for any warranty work/look at things, do I have to take it where I bought the car from?

Thanks,
-Nigel

I would take it to the dealer you trust to determine the problem (if there is one). If they find something wrong they have to inform you before they do anything to fix it. If they give you problems because you have mods, take it to another dealer to fix it under warranty or take it to AAMCO and pay for it yourself. ANY Subaru dealer will do warranty work, it's their job.

I dont have a wrx, but in my 99 2.2, i have a sort of whistle as well. my gears shift pretty crisply, but theres a slight whistle. when i put my foot under the clutch and lift up, it stops. would that be a low fluid problem as well? i took it to the dealer a few months ago, they said it was the throwout bearing, and it was fixed for a while. now its back, just not as loud.

You can take it to any Subaru dealer you like. But most likely they won't do anything about it. Just add some good tranny oil or something.

I don't have any mods to my car other than a turbo timer... other than that the snorkless is removed but nothing else, car is completly stock so far...hehehe

As far as trasmission oil where do I fill it up, I looked in the manual and it said that it is near the back of the car... is this correct? If I am checking right undernethe the intercooler why would I be filling it up in the back?

How do you tell the dealership to check everything over? Like check fluids, check for any problems... etc!?

Thanks :-)

Just change it yourself. You will get a good look at all the chunks and particles and will have a better idea if you might have a problem. If fresh oil doesn't help, then take it to the dealer.
