You know what grinds my gears? Grinding gears!

A poll to prove a point:

How many of you subaru 5 speed owners regularly grind gears for no particular reason? I'm talking about normal driving, when you engage into a gear you hear that wonderful "GRIIIIIIND" sound even though the clutch is all the way in and you've done everything normally.

Mine has done it since I got the car (5 miles on it), I've tried changing fluids 3 times, yet it still does it. Mainly 3rd gear, sometimes first when I'm at a stop, and don't get me started on the IMPOSSIBLE reverse gear (Impossible to engage without clutching like 8 times).

My Mustang tranny used to do that constantly and I hated it...
I rebuilt that damn tranny and it still did it! Then it started popping out of gear any time it was in 3rd...damn it pissed me off...It got the the point where it wouldnt even go into reverse without moving forward in first beforehand...of course, then again I was very hard on that tranny...poor 5.0
I feel your pain...
But alas...my STi is awesome to shift...sorry... :-/

Try using the far left pedal more often!

I don't know what you're talking about. They're not supposed to grind.

I only grind my 5speed sometimes because of the kartboy shifter bushing. Its pretty notchy and only when I half-*** a shift do I grind 2nd gear. Completely me being a lazy *** and not the subies fault!!!

I dont really have a prob with it. i know that in the bugeyes you cant downshift into first if you are still moving.

i can shift into first at like 25 mph but i dont.

reverse can be a pain but if i get the car just to move a tiny bit it will go into gear. maybe something is wrong with your clutch. even though yo9u have the pedal down all the way doesnt mean it is completely engaged you know.

just a thought

ya, i grind on the rare occasion, but that's usually because it helps to push the clutch all the way in when you want to shift in to 3rd...

[can we say user error]

mine will grind in first sometimes. If i'm sitting at a light in neutral and i quickly depress clutch and engage first it will grind. If i depress clutch and wait a second or two, it's fine. I've been an SCCA racer and driven manuel trans my whole life, this is the only car that has ever done this to me.
My brother in law had an 03 wagon that did the same thing to him.

its user error on my part, whether it be a cobbled regular shift or a cobbled quick shift. Def I always let the car get warmed up and softened up a lil before I start ripping thru the gears...........

that being said the sti 6 speed is not a tranny to complain about. It's awesome imo

Only gear I grind every once in a while is reverse. Even while my foot is all the way on the floor. Its even done it after the car was sitting parked then I turned it on and push down the clutch all the way and start going into reverse it will grind... then I go back to neutral then clutch again and go into reverse w/ out grinding.

one thing I can recommend, and I was in the habit with my old ae86, was to run the shifter into 4th first, then pop that bad boy into reverse. worked like a charm.

Jeff for what ever reason these trannys don't like to go into reverse sometimes. Don't force or grind it, put it into first and move it forward just a hair. Then try reverse. If I'm not mistaken first and reverse are on the same pinion.
