sti tranny
i was wondering if anyone has had a problem with their trans. i go about 70mph in 5th go to downshift to 4th then it grinds. it only happens in that type of situation. brought it to the dealer and they said that they will take the tranny out, send it to subaru car club of america and they will look at it. before all that, they said i need to sign some paper work saying that i will agree to pay $1,000 if when they do send it and scca says its not under warranty, that the money pays for the dealer taking and sending out the tranny. the dealer said that scca said this whole process only takes place with the sti. so, i'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
im kind of curious when you guys say it "grinds". do u mean it doesnt go in gear, for example on a cold morning when you try to get in 1st gear or 2nd gear? or are you talking about actual errr grind?

I haven't heard of shifting issues with other STi/6MT owners. I'm also not familiar with this Subaru Car Club of America (other than the racing sanctioning body SCCA). The car should be covered by the standard drivetrain warranty. Any other STi owners out there have transmission issues?

He means "SOA" not "SCCA".
Dan, the issue is the fact that US dealers are not yet fully trained on repairing the STi gearbox, so they aren't allowed to do it. They pull the gearbox, ship it to Cherry Hill, NJ, and SOA decides what to do there. You have to agree to pay expenses incurred in diagnoses for any repair that is declined under warranty- for example: You take the car in for what you think is rod knock. They diagnose it, check things, and it turns out the car is low on oil, say 2 quarts. Since the problem is found to be your fault, you have to pay for the dealer's time for diagnosis. The difference in the case of the 6MT is simply that the cost is much higher due to shipping. From your description of the problem, it sounds like you *should* be covered under warranty for a faulty synchro. If it grinds on the 3-4 shift, you'll have a hard time convincing them it's not abuse.
