I'm concerned with the "long-run" factor. I don't want to get something, and a year later be telling myself it was a stupid mistake. This is a major plus for the WRX.

What about the Forester? Is there a model with the WRX engine? How would insurance payments compare?

the forester XT is a turbo 2.5, but the oldest model will be an 04. I'm not sure how that would fit into your budget. Theoretically, the forester would be cheaper to insure since it considered an SUV and less young people drive them (compared to the WRX). But they are still very quick and powerful cars.

as far as insurance goes, it would just be best to call up some insurance companies and get a quote straight from them. there are way too many variables in determining insurance rates to really give you an accurate guess.

i would assume however that it would be slightly cheaper for the forester...but not by much.

But can the WRX engine Foresters be modded as easily as a WRX?

oh yeah, for sure. All the companies that support the WRX, support the forester as well. There aren't quite as many options, but you would still have plenty of options.

IMO the Forester is a great alternative to the WRX, that is, if you don't mind driving one since your friends might call you a square. But the important thing is, YOU HAVE A CAR, and it's turbo! Plus think of all the extra room in the back

Just comparing the size of the Impreza Wagon to the size of the Forester:

Length is the same. Impreza: 175.8", Forester: 176.6".
Wheelbases are both 99.4".
Width is pretty close: Impreza: 66.7", Forester: 68.3".
Height is where it's the most different: Impreza: 58.5", Frester: 65.0".
Headroom: Both at 39" in the front, 37" in the rear seat.
Legroom: Both at 43" in the front, both at 33.7" in the rear seat.
Shoulder room is just about the same.
Curb weight: Impreza: 3,252 lbs., Forester: 3,320 lbs.
Cargo Capacity: Impreza: 27.9 cubic feet w/rear seats up, Forester: 28.9 cu.ft. w/seats up.
Impreza: 61.6 cu.ft. w/rear seats down, Forester: 64.5 cu.ft. w/seats down.
The Forester can tow 2,400 pounds while the Impreza can tow 2,000 pounds.

Good info. I have to say I was very impressed this weekend when I test drove the new Sport. Very smooth ride and power, I didnt realize how close they were.

It's the same chasis? I didn't know that. It makes sense though.

So assuming insurance would be less on the Forester, would it be worth it to go with that instead of the WRX? It would turn out to be very unique, there's no modded Forester's in my area.

You can't go wrong with either one. It just depends on personal preference to which bodystyle you like better.

Here's some samples of modded Foresters to get you drooling:

Yeah that's 100% awesome. I don't even want to think about making a decision between the Forester and the WRX. They're both so awesome!
